Summer Camp Assistant for Zooper Day Camp

This is your opportunity to join the dynamic Education team at Woodland Park Zoo. Applications are now being accepted for Summer Camp Assistant for Zooper Day Camp in the Child & Family Programs department. There are multiple part-time, temporary, non-benefited positions to be filled at this time.

The Camp Assistant aids instructors in presenting age-appropriate curriculum and teaching camp programs to children ages 4-9 years old, depending on program. Woodland Park Zoo’s Day Camps are designed to increase awareness and respect of wildlife and conservation through age-appropriate activities, games, crafts and zoo tours. Camp staff utilize two pre-determined curricula to teach environmental education concepts and connect children with nature. Assistants are part of a dynamic team including instructors, paid assistants and volunteers. Each assistant works in a team with an instructor and teen volunteers to aid in teaching 12-14 children each week. There are half-day and full-day sessions offered across five age groups for children ages 4-9 years old.

The ability to work all dates and times listed below is required for this position:

  • June 10 and June 17, 2017 – Weekend required trainings (full-day)
  • June 19 - September 1, 2017: Mon-Fri, 37-40 hours per week (no camp July 4)

SUMMARY

Provide support and assistance to Education Instructors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the presentation of engaging programs and experiences for all ages utilizing developmentally appropriate practices that inspire conservation action
  • Assist with monitoring children in a variety of conditions on zoo grounds
  • Assist with program set-up/take-down and prop/materials maintenance and inventories
  • Maintain an environment aimed at the safety and well-being of program participants
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

One year certificate from an accredited college or technical school, preferably in the natural sciences or education; or six months related experience working with children, preferably with a strong background in early childhood education or primary grades and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

None required. First Aid and CPR preferred.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Must have basic computer skills to access email and submit online timesheet. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office required.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS

Must be enthusiastic, customer service oriented and able to deal with clients in a courteous and professional manner. Must enjoy working with the public including diverse populations and people of all ages.
