WORK OBJECTIVE

 

The City of Winter Garden is looking for a creative, energetic and positive individual to fill the position of Summer Day Camp Coordinator.  This position oversees the overall operation of summer day camp for approximately 150 youth ages 5 – 14.  The Day Camp Coordinator is also responsible for program planning, staff supervision and training as well as implementing activities and working directly with children and their families.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Supervise day camp counselors to ensure safety and quality.
  • Assist in Field Trip Agenda for each respective group.
  • Maintain accurate break schedules.
  • Coordinate and implement CIT training sessions (3 days per week).
  • Serve as break counselor when needed.
  • Assist in training sessions.
  • Help organize, lead games and other recreational activities.
  • Help organize and implement structured pool activities in accordance to rules set forth by pool staff.  
  • Will accompany campers on field trips and other recreational activities.
  • Recommend purchase of new equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain Supply log for activities.  
  • Experience working with 5 – 15 year olds.
  • Strong guidance skills and ability to plan in camp areas.
  • Act as the lead disciplinary for camp and ensure counselors are providing quality supervision to all campers.
  • Communicate day camp policies to parents/campers on a daily basis or as needed.
  • Maintain proper attendance records and run sign-out each day.
  • Responsible for night drop of payments in safe.
  • Participate in all pre-camp training and staff meetings throughout the entire summer.
  • Act as interim counselor in the absence of any regular counselor.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by Recreation Supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Candidates should be comfortable working with children ages 5 – 14 at ratios establish for respective age groups.
  • Candidate should be creative with the ability to improvise, maintain good judgment, maturity and patience.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred and must be obtained prior to start of camp.
  • Ability to attend all pre-summer mandatory trainings.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Possession of valid Florida Driver’s License.

 

Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Knowledge of group games, sports and activities for children.
  • Ability to teach/ lead groups of children ages 5 – 14.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, speak in front of large groups and lead activities.
  • Ability to work well, remain flexible and provide support to fellow camp staff.
  • Ability to maintain proper records and lesson plans for the duration of the summer.
  • Good judgment, maturity and patience are all a must in this position.
  • CPR/First Aid preferred but not required.
  • Applicant must be able to pass local, state and federal background check as well as a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Tact and patience when dealing with the public and parents of campers.
  • Patience and ability to interact with children ages 5 – 14.
  • Ability to cooperate with fellow camp staff and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Versatility and flexibility.
  • Respect for confidential information.
  • Ability to work in diverse weather conditions. 
  • All candidates must have experience working with children in a camp setting.
  • Day camp coordinator should be safety conscious, responsible, creative and able to improvise fun at any given time.
