Purpose of Division

As a congressionally-chartered national nonprofit organization, NeighborWorks America's mission is to reverse the decline in America's neighborhoods, strengthen communities, build sustainable partnerships and increase the supply of safe and affordable housing.

The Office of the EVP & Chief Operating Officer establishes measurable goals and priorities for programmatic divisions consistent with the corporate strategic plan; identifies opportunities for collaboration, coordination and sharing of resources across divisional lines and ensures implementation; serves as communication liaison between operating divisions and Chief Executive Officer and other corporate officers; prepares and presents recommendations for policy changes and programmatic initiatives; and encourages, nurtures, articulates and oversees new programmatic initiatives that have broad corporate, network and external implications.

The purpose of the Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) initiative is to increase the competency and effectiveness of NeighborWorks America and the NeighborWorks organizations (NWOs) to address issues of race, equity, diversity and inclusion at the individual, organizational, and community levels in service to our mission “to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities.” The initiative recognizes that issues of race, ethnicity, diversity and inclusion must be addressed on multiple levels, using a mix of approaches and it requires an intentional, longer term institutional commitment if it is to succeed.

Position Summary

NeighborWorks America seeks an intern for our Washington, D.C. office to support our efforts focused on developing the Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) Initiative, by applying a diversity and inclusion lens in all areas of our work.

This work includes support in researching and developing an organizational learning agenda for staff to gain core competencies, skills and knowledge surrounding race, inequity and privilege; supporting the development and curate the NW America REDI member site and employee site (and other events) to provide articles, tools, best practices; producing written research summaries and information briefs about the intersection of rcial equity and community development; working with the REDI advisory committees to support their efforts around corporates policies and practices; and contributing to newsletters, blog posts and staff that facilitates on going discussion/dialogue on race, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The intern may also do some of the following: provide strategic research and support to inform current and potential future engagements; support the development and cultivation of learning cohorts on specific REDI topics; conduct interviews with corporate stakeholders on race, equity and inclusion practices and programs; and assist with capacity-building and communication activities.

This is an unpaid internship for academic credit only.  Preferred duration:  January 2017 - May 2017

 Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Sr. Manager to support researching on race, equity, diversity and inclusion in community development systems.
  • Contributing to newsletters, blog posts, staff discussions, social media, and/or white papers on race, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Supporting the development of the race, equity, diversity and inclusion InsideNeighborWorks and Network Member page.
  • Participating with the Sr. Manager to document NeighborWorks progress of the race, equity, diversity and inclusion initiative efforts and outcomes.
  • Contributing to the development of materials for symposia, advisory committees, and/or other events.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work Contacts: Engage with internal stakeholders from multiple divisions with the organization, as well as with stakeholders from the race equity and community development field.

Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications: 
(a) Education:   Active enrollment in undergraduate or graduate program is required. GPA of 2.5 and above is required.

(b) Experience:     Internship is open to undergraduate and/or graduate students in Gender studies, ethnic studies, social work, public health, anthropology, sociology, urban planning, architecture, public policy, nonprofit management, arts management, cultural geography, fine arts, or other areas related with an interest racial equity and community development.

(c) Licenses, Certifications:  
(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
(e) Technology: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher) Adobe, Photoshop, and/or other social media tools and/or design tools.
 
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mission-driven, community development interest
  • Understanding of racial equity and knowledge of race/ethnicity and gender disparities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive computer skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to racial and social equity issues (experience in field a plus)
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Great team player (experience working effectively with diverse stakeholders a plus)
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills
  • Strong sense of humility and willingness to seek ongoing feedback for improvement
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Creativity, flexibility and adaptability
  • Detailed oriented
  • Preferred availability -  20 hours or 3 days a week.

Working Conditions 
(a) Travel:  Up to 10%.
(b) Physical/Sensory Demands:   Fast paced working environment, project-driven work environment, extensive computer usage. Light lifting up to 25 lbs.
