Purpose of Division

The Public Relations Division manages overall corporate content strategy, media relations, digital presence and the publishing and distribution of the corporation's publications and videos. These publications include the annual report and e-newsletters such as NeighborWorks Works (public) and NetWorks (for NeighborWorks organization executive directors and board presidents). The division also provides graphic design support to other business units throughout the corporation and coordinates the corporation's web strategy.

This is an unpaid internship for academic credit only.  Preferred duration:  January 2017 - May 2017

Position Summary

The intern’s role is key to the NeighborWorks strategic plan goal of increasing visibility for NeighborWorks and the network. The intern will work closely with the 11 network members that are participating in the 2017 NeighborWorks Media Relations program. The intern will write media pitches for second tier media markets and pitch journalists in those markets. The intern will learn how to effectively pitch journalists, become proficient in the media relations software products Cision and Meltwater, organize editorial board meetings with media outlets, write email pitches to reporters and learn how to complete a communications and social media plan. The intern’s workload and deadlines will accommodate the school calendar. NeighborWorks will be mindful of exam schedules and school-related closings. The intern will grow and learn new skills that they can add to their resume.  Upon completion of the internship the intern could have examples of actual media placements, an electronic rolodex of journalists and solid pitching experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist NeighborWorks media relations participants in identifying opportunities in the news to increase visibility for their groups, the NeighborWorks network and NeighborWorks America
  • Assist in scheduling editorial board meetings at media outlets in 11 media markets for NeighborWorks media relations participants
  • Assist in story pitch research, writing and outreach to media. Draft op-ed and newsletter templates
  • Build relationships with reporters, columnists, producers, and bookers in mainstream and trade media by pitching them one-on-one
  • Maintain and execute editorial calendar. Assist in creating original content for slides and PowerPoint presentations for webinars
  • Monitor trends in social media tools, applications and media relations
  • Develop and maintain media lists using Microsoft Excel and public relations software (Cision and Meltwater)
  • Track earned media hits for NeighborWorks media relations participants
  • Support NeighborWorks media relations participants and Public Relations division in other aspects of communications strategy as needed
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work Contacts:
NeighborWorks America officers, senior leaders and staff to share information, and network media relations program staff.

Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Education: College junior or senior with GPA of 2.8 or above

(b) Experience: Interest in communications, journalism

(c) Licenses, Certifications: None

(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter, eager learner and team player
  • Energetic approach to problem-solving
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and shifting priorities

(e) Technology: Proficient with social media platforms.

Preferred Qualifications: familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Zoom webinar software and video editing software is preferred but not required.
