Applies to all activities and guidelines for operations performed by the Motorman. The Motorman is primarily responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing drilling machinery and equipment.  The Motorman will perform all maintenance to the equipment, including minor repairs in a safe and efficient manner under the direct supervision of the Driller or the Assistant Driller. The Motorman assists the Floorman with duties on the rig floor.  This job description shall be reviewed on a regular basis.



  • Performs rig up, down, and operating activities for 12-16 hours per day, for 7-20 consecutive days. This includes all maintenance to engines.

  • Keeps track of engine hours for preventative work.

  • Operates and inspects Forklift, Manlift, and Catwalk.

  • Documents any equipment failures or malfunctions on report and communicates to Driller.

  • Documents labor tasks on the rig floor and Blow Out Preventer area.

  • Responsible for “nippling up and nippling down” with care to the BOP system.

  • Performs housekeeping tasks on generators, SCR, Koomey unit, crew quarters and rig site.

  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed.


  • Ensure any equipment failures or malfunctions on report are communicated to the Driller.

Position Requirements

Must have a valid Driver's License and a reliable vehicle for transportation to and from the rig locations. 

Must be able to read, write and speak English.

High school education or equivalent is preferred but not required. 

Must be certified to operate the forklift, catwalk, and man lift

At least 1 year previous motorman experience or as deemed sufficient by management.

Regularly required to walk, stand, climb ladders, lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. A large portion of the work will be 13’ off the rig floor so good balance and coordination is a must.   

Work is normally performed out-of-doors, where exposure to atmospheric conditions of extreme heat or cold.  The job will require that occasional work will be done on slick surfaces due to weather, drilling mud, or oil/grease. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
