Applies to all activities and guidelines for operations performed by the Derrickman. The Derrickman is primarily responsible for handling tubulars in the derrick and maintaining the mud (drilling fluid) system.  This job description shall be reviewed on a regular basis.



  • Performs rig up, down, and operating activities for 12-16 hours per day, for 7-20 consecutive days.

  • Mixes chemicals in a safe and efficient manner by checking and mixing weight properly.

  • Performs maintenance on mud tanks and pumps.

  • Monitors and operates the shakers, works on mud pit, pumps and chemical sacks.

  • Maintains an inventory of all pump parts.

  • Sustains oil levels at adequate levels, grease and check oil in agitator, crown and in mud pumps.

  • Pulls/latches drill pipe and collar depending on task while on monkey board.

  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed.


  • Ensure the safety and quality of the tubulars in the derrick and the mud system.


Position Requirements

A valid Driver's License is required and must have a reliable vehicle for transportation to and from the rigs.

Must be able to read, write and speak English 

High school education or equivalent is preferred but not required. 

At least 1 year previous derrickman experience or as deemed sufficient by management.  Must be able to lead others.  


  • Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  This position requires working at heights in excess of 100' for continuous or long periods of time.  Good balance, coordination, strength, endourance and a strong safety attitude is a must.    
  • Work is normally performed out-of-doors, where exposure to atmospheric conditions of extreme heat or cold and chemical handling are frequent.  
  • Due to chemical handling requirements, specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required.  Applicants may be required to successfully pass a pulmonary function test, be medically cleared and able to be fit tested for and don a 1/2 mask respirator.
