Applies to all activities and guidelines for operations performed by the Driller. The Driller is primarily responsible for operating, repairing drilling equipment, and supervising a work crew. The Driller will operate and monitor the essential systems of the drilling rig including: the hoisting, well control, mud and power systems found on all drilling rigs. The Driller works under the direct supervision of the Rig Manager. This job description shall be reviewed as needed.



  • Performs rig up, down, and operating activities for 12-16 hours per day, for 7-20 consecutive days.

  • Organize rig moves and setting up of a rig and camp.

  • Operates and repairs drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Assists Rig Manager to oversee and ensure assigned crews are properly trained in accordance with company requirements. This includes conducting training for all primary and secondary drilling operations.

  • Understands and demonstrates the safe handling, proper application, and proper disposal of drilling fluids.

  • Establishes a relationship with crew and acts as a liaison between the crew and the Rig Manager.

  • Ensures all well control equipment is properly maintained, repairs are completed in a timely manner, and all personnel are properly trained to operate the equipment.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive safety cultural climate in all work practices, enabling personnel to slow down or stop tasks that are deemed to have excessive risk.

  • Conducts periodic inspections of the rig and rig location, identifying issues regarding safe and efficient operations of the rig, and makes timely recommendations to rectify any noted problems.

  • Maintains appropriate documentation (i.e. reports, logs, etc.) in accordance with company policy.

  • Communicates to Rig Manager of changing well condition and severe weather conditions or other environmental factors that would inhibit operations.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; Appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed.


  • Operate and repair drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Ensure assigned crews are properly trained in accordance with company requirements.

Position Requirements

Must have a valid Driver's License and a reliable vehicle for transportation to and from the rig locations.

Must be able to read, write and speak English 

High school education or equivalent, or as deemed sufficient by Management.  

Should understand I.A.D.C. and M.S.D.S. regulations. 

Should have a well control (supervisor level)/IADC certificate.   (BOP Certified) Must be First Aid and CPR certified. 

Must be computer literate.  Requires inputting data and information into various computer systems and applications. 

Must have 3-5 year previous drilling rig experience with at least 6 months experience as an Assistant Driller or equivalent experience deemed sufficient by management.

Must be able to lift, move or carry up to 50 pounds.  A large portion of the work will be off the ground so good balance and coordination is a must.   

Work is normally performed out-of-doors, where exposure to atmospheric conditions of extreme heat or cold.  The job will require that occasional work will be done on slick surfaces due to weather, drilling mud, or oil/grease.
