Intake Attorney

Job Description

           

The Intake Attorney is responsible for the review of client issues for additional development by the intake staff.  The first contact clients, courts, attorneys and government officials have with DRNY is often with the Intake Unit.  Therefore, it is essential that it operate professionally, accurately and efficiently.  The Intake Unit gathers from potential clients the information DRNY needs to determine what assistance is being sought, eligibility under one or more of our programs, and whether the assistance sought is of a type that DRNY provides.  In the case of matters with which DRNY cannot assist, the Intake Unit provides useful information, technical assistance, and referrals to other sources of assistance.  This position reports to the Intake Director.

 

Essential Functions

  • Review closing letters of non-attorney intake staff to ensure accuracy of legal advice;
  • Ensure that emergency matters, and allegations of abuse or neglect of persons with disabilities are identified, and timely and accurately referred to appropriate DRNY staff;
  • Ensure that intake staff correctly identifies potential client issues as well as obtain and accurately record necessary information in the DRNY client database;
  • Provide real-time daily backup and legal support to 6 intake staff in all 3 DRNY offices;
  • Provide accurate and helpful legal information, technical assistance, and referrals; and ensure that the intake staff does the same;
  • Identify matters that fall within the priorities of DRNY’s programs, and ensure that such matters are promptly, efficiently and accurately transmitted to the appropriate DRNY programs for timely assistance;
  • Handle client calls when needed;
  • Provide technical assistance and legal advice to outside attorneys;
  • Assist in maintaining accurate, confidential records documenting services provided;
  • Ensure that intake office duties and special projects are timely completed;
  • Maintain resource materials regarding DRNY for distribution to the public and use by intake staff;
  • Assist the Intake Director with organization of the clerical and administrative functions of the Intake Unit;
  • Assist in preparing reports;
  • Perform related tasks consistent with skills, abilities, and general responsibilities as assigned to support DRNY.

 

Qualifications

  • Be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar and maintain such standing throughout employment with DRNY;
  • 2 year’s legal experience preferred;
  • Ability to identify legal issues;
  • General practice, civil rights and disability rights experience preferred;
  • Excellent computer and database skills are a must;
  • Strong communications skills;
  • Detail oriented;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals;
  • Experience working with or for people with disabilities preferred.

 

 

Working Conditions

 

An Intake Attorney usually performs work in an office environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take an Intake Attorney to non-standard workplaces.  This position is based in Albany, NY.  An Intake Attorney will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary.

 

Salary: DOE, with excellent benefits.  This position is Exempt and will be paid on an annualized salary basis.
