Job Summary

This position is in the Exhibits Department of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and reports to the Director, Exhibit Design and Production.  The department is responsible for the planning, design, and installation of the museum’s exhibitions, installations, and projects. The Exhibition AV Manager will work as an essential member of the exhibition design team and will be responsible for the media needs for all installations. The incumbent will provide a range of audiovisual technical services and support and supervise any contract technicians. The incumbent will coordinate all equipment operation aspects of exhibition development and presentation. Media works may include, but are not limited to, 16mm and 35mm film, DVD, Digibeta, BetaSP, harddisk, videotape, and analog and digital sound formats.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as audiovisual specialist for exhibitions, installations, and projects.

  • Responsible for researching developing technologies and implementing technologies for all exhibition and project needs.

  • Assist in the planning and manage the execution of technically complex and/or artistically demanding projects.

  • Work closely with the exhibition and curatorial team, as well as artists, external designers, and other contractors to understand exhibition and in order to recommend strategies for using media to present artworks within the exhibition or installation.

  • As required, works with artists to attain specifications for artworks and ensure proper installation of works.

  • Work closely with curatorial, programming, IT, and projection staff, as necessary, on projects and programs.

  • Requests additional professional audiovisual and lighting technical support as needed for exhibitions. Supervises contracted technicians for installations. Maintains up-to-date files of additional technical support personnel.

  • As necessary, trains staff in proper equipment use and procedures.

  • Supervises the condition and storage of audiovisual equipment and maintains and updates an inventory and maintenance record for equipment. Supervises repairs, as well as any service contracts related to that equipment.

 
Position Requirements
  • Experience in the setup, operation, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of audiovisual equipment for exhibition and presentation needs, including, but not limited to 16mm and 35mm silent and sound motion picture projectors; front and rear video projectors LCD and DLP; large industrial grade multi-component sound systems; multichannel audio mixers; video and projection equipment; xenon projection sources; multimedia systems

  • Working knowledge of a wide range of digital and analogue source materials including, but not limited to, 16mm and 35mm film, Quicktime, ProRes, mpeg4, 8&10 bit uncompressed files

  • Knowledge of a wide range of principles, practices, methods, and techniques for moving-image media production using a wide variety of source materials and display technologies and experience utilizing this knowledge for the design, planning, production, and execution of highly complex, large-scale projects and installations.

  • Experience working with living artists to install works for exhibition.

  • Knowledge of media arts history and technology, including various film, video, and sound formats.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work as a team.

  • Ability to prioritize and compartmentalize duties.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment, as needed.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Enthusiasm, commitment, open-mindedness and integrity.

  • The capacity to work quickly, precisely and efficiently under deadlines.

  • Undergraduate degree; have 3+ years related experience

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs
