Mechanical Journeyperson (Grand Rapids, MI) 


GMCH Grand Rapids has a need for qualified Mechanical Journeypersons (i.e., millwright, pipefitter, toolmaker, machine repair). Working under minimal supervision with a high level of independent judgment and problem solving, the Mechanical Journeyperson specializes in maintaining production and quality by ensuring operation of industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. The Mechanical Journeyperson needs to be flexible enough to take on multiple job assignments in a shift and be skilled at priority setting.



  • Follow established safety procedures per OSHA standards and company procedures.

  • Support high volume metalworking and automated assembly operations by diagnosing root cause of machine problems that impact throughput, quality, or safety.

  • Repair or replace mechanical components (e. g. bearings, seals, couplings, etc.) on industrial machinery.

  • Repair or replace hydraulic and pneumatic components on machine tools and conveyance systems.

  • Troubleshoot and repair automated feeders, conveyors and material handling systems.

  • Assemble, fabricate, install and repair piping systems.

  • Fabricate basic sheet metal assemblies (e.g. guards, enclosures)

  • Operate mobile equipment (e. g. forklifts, vertical lifts, mobile cranes).

  • Determine requirements to safely rig equipment and material for lifting.

  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to machine parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.

  • When fabricating tooling or blueprint items verify conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and correct non-standard conditions when observed.

Position Requirements

Interested individuals must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • U.S. Department of Labor Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate in a Mechanical trade (e.g., millwright, pipefitter, tool maker, machine repair) or six (6) years of documented experience in a Mechanical Trade (notarized documentation required)
  • Available to work any shift
  • Available to work overtime including daily, weekend, and holidays


  • Experience with metalworking machinery that includes CNC lathes, ID grinders, centerless grinders, screw machines, and cold formers.
  • Experience with planned maintenance systems and predictive technologies
