Protection & Advocacy for Voter Access and Assistive Technology

Advocate Job Description

 

Disability Rights New York (DRNY) is seeking a PAVA/PAAT Advocate.  The Protection & Advocacy for Voter Access (PAVA) and Protection & Advocacy for Assistive Technology (PAAT) Advocate will engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities. This position reports to the PAVA Director and PAAT Director.

It is the mission of DRNY to protect and advance the rights of adults and children who have disabilities so that they can freely exercise their own life choices, enforce their rights, and fully participate in their community life.

 

Duties of the PAVA/PAAT Advocate position include:

  • Provide advocacy services to people with disabilities on issues related to voting and voting access and denials of or use of assistive technology, including client and other interviews, identifying issues, determining a course of action, developing and implementing appropriate advocacy strategies, negotiating solutions to problems, and/or encouraging self-advocacy, when appropriate.
  • Analyze existing cases as well as other matters to determine if they present systemic issues relating to voting and voting access and denials of assistive technology which may be appropriate for DRNY to address, and, with the PAVA Director and PAAT Director, formulate strategies for dealing with such issues.
  • Act in accordance with identified Priorities and Goals of the PAVA and PAAT Programs.
  • Consult with people with disabilities, family members, advocacy groups, and others to identify barriers to voting for people with disabilities and identify strategies to address such barriers and issues.
  • Consult with people with disabilities, family members, advocacy groups and others to identify barriers to assistive technology for people with disabilities and identify strategies to address such barriers and issues.
  • Assist people with disabilities in voting-related advocacy and systems change efforts.
  • Assist people with disabilities in assistive technology advocacy and systems change efforts.
  • Support DRNY projects and initiatives that foster self-determination, self-advocacy, and coalition building.
  • Participate on task forces, coalitions, and committees as assigned.
  • Develop training and education materials and conduct training and outreach activities on issues relating to voting and voting access and assistive technology.
  • Keep informed on advocacy strategies, technology advances, and other best practices designed to increase participation by people with disabilities in the voting process and gain and maintain access to assistive technology.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential files documenting advocacy services provided.
  • Assist in preparing reports to funding sources.
  • Maintain accurate time records and client records, including accurate use of the Disability Advocacy Database (DAD), which is necessary for DRNY to meet its programmatic and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Timely open and close case files regarding client matters.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with skills, abilities, and general responsibilities as required to support DRNY.
  • Be available to travel throughout New York State and outside of New York State as necessary to perform assigned job tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working with or for people with disabilities preferred
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to provide education and training to large groups
  • Strong communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals

Working Conditions

PAVA/PAAT Advocates usually perform work in an office environment, but the position requires travel throughout New York State.  This position is located in DRNY’s Rochester office.

  • Salary range is $35,000-$45,000 annualized, with excellent benefits.
