CLASS SUMMARY:         

The objective of the Communications and Business Development Director (CBBD) is to assist the Executive Director in overseeing all business development initiatives; including special events, grant research and submissions, public and donor relations, resource development and management, and marketing/social media plans.  Develops communication, marketing and public relations materials to enhance the organization’s brand; including press releases, newsletters, cover stories, and public relations content and social media.  Serves as a key leadership team member and as an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the agency.  The successful candidate will help forge new and genuine relationships to build the H-NNCSB’s visibility, impact, and financial resources.  The incumbent will design and implement and comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS OF THE CLASS:

I.  IMPACT:  Assist the Executive Director in all marketing and online communication roles.  The CBBD will create and expand new and existing social media outreach tools, content updates to our website, responsible for coordinating production calendar, social media and backup of database technician responsibilities.  The Business Development position will have primary responsibility for building and implementing the infrastructure needed to oversee business development initiatives and grant support.  The CBBD will expand and diversify the H-NNCSB’s business and strategic initiatives and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new streams.  Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program, provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.

II.  LATITUDE:  Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the H-NNCSB.

III.  RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS:  Incumbent may supervise administrative staff.

IV.  INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:  Work involves continuous interface with the highest level of agency management, board, and staff.  Incumbent develops and maintains effective contacts with local, state, and federal government officials, legal representatives, department heads, non-profit service providers, community groups, organizations, businesses and legislators.  Work involves representing the agency on matters regarding communications and business development activities.  Contacts include the development of high level public and private collaborative partnerships – local, state, and federal – in the pursuit of investment opportunities and the promotion of HNNCSB programs and needs.  Public speaking and representing the HNNCSB are required.

V.  DIFFICULTY:  This position requires a passionate leader who can be influential in the community and help the agency to achieve its mission.  Advice, support and partner with the Executive Director and board members (as directed) on all major development initiatives.  Actively work with the Executive Director and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive financial and development strategy to include individual, corporate, foundation, grants, etc.

VI.  COMMUNICATIONS:  Excellent verbal and written communication skills required, frequent contact with the public, media, community stakeholders and officials.

VII.  EQUIPMENT/FACILITIES RESPONSIBILITY:  Proficient computer skills in database management, Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and Word, and website management.

VIII.  WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is primarily performed in a typical office environment.  On occasion incumbent is required to visit potential development sites, housing sites, and places that are unfit for human habitation.  Work requires some travel.

IX.  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’S):

Maintain website and content/updates, as well as social media sites.

Interview and write articles for use in publications and communications.

Excellent verbal communication; professional, confident, adaptable and flexible in a busy work environment.

Works well independently and as part of a team, with strong follow-up skills.

Exceptional problem solving skills, ability to manage time effectively, manage multiple projects and work independently.

Must be effective and persuasive in presenting materials and its mission to government and community leaders, stakeholders, and the public at large.

Experience in public speaking preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and fundraising software.

Excellent organizational, administrative, word processing and data entry skills required.

Identifies and prepares grant applications to garner support of corporations, and foundations.

Delivers organized structured and persuasive presentations to represent the H-NNCSB in the community.

Expectations require initiative, good judgment, knowledge of individual accounts, as well as handling matter of highly confidential nature.

Ability to apply analytical skills and creative problem solving to solutions/analyses in a pro-active manner.

Self-starter with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Editing skills and consistent error-free work.

Demonstrate excellent customer service, follow through, and courtesy.

Demonstrate ability to work cross functionally and as part of a team to accomplish individual and mutually defined goals.

Maintain the social media accounts, including writing and posting new briefs and photographs on the sites, assisting with managing the online giving function, and helping to keep the sites current and lively.

Assisting the Executive Director of the H-NNCSB in developing, communicating, and coordinating CSB Board meetings and public awareness activities.

Experience with nonprofit operating practices and principles.

Experience with fundraising.

Other duties as assigned.

X.  LICENSURE:  Valid VA driver’s license.

XI.  PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLASS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

Oversees business development and marketing events, management, and logistics.

Work with the organization’s leadership team on a comprehensive digital media strategy to define programs that use social media marketing techniques to increase visibility across all brands and implements and manages digital media programs.

Grant writing and resource development.

Tracks and creates reports that detail and analyze the performance of digital media marketing.

Communicates with the press and media as directed by the Executive Director.

Fosters collaboration and teamwork.

Work in close partnership with management and staff to support Resource Development.

Demonstrated ability to develop, articulate and implement annual strategic and operational plans.

High energy and passion for improving the lives of the individuals served and familiarity with the changing behavioral healthcare infrastructure.

Managing the H-NNCSB’s business development and outreach efforts to the internal and external communities.

Conducts presentations for local and state elected officials, and stakeholder agencies.

Works with local colleges, universities in developing partnerships and resource development.

Coordinates activities in response to needs identified by the Executive leadership and Management Teams.

Completes annual report, brochures and other educational material in line with regulatory requirements.

XII.  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.  Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a: personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.  Some walking, moving, carrying, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.  Some running after individuals, walking up and down stairs, assisting individuals on and off vans, kneeling and crawling.
