GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:   Assist the Director and other senior staff and volunteers in carrying out development programs of the national setting of the United Church of Christ by providing leadership in identifying major gift prospects and evaluating their capacity and propensity to financially support ministries of the church. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

       

  • Ensure identification and cultivation of new prospects and organize prospect information within Raiser’s Edge to ensure incorporation of information.

  • Explore, gather and compile background materials and create profile reports on prospects and constituents using information analysis from public sources.

  • Develop prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and fundraising strategies by coordinating with development staff.

  • Determine feasibility, deliverables and research requests timelines by consulting with OPS staff.

  • Proactively and independently plan and execute creative strategies to identify sources of major gifts using creative research techniques and electronic searching methods to ensure that fundraising initiatives have sufficient prospects to meet fundraising goals.

  • Develop and execute strategies to ensure that newly identified prospects are presented and assigned to appropriate UCC fundraisers in a timely manner.

  • Provide high-level research on individuals, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational and financial sources, including state-of-the-art online database services, Internet websites, library and government sources and other external repositories of public information.

  • Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity and linkages to UCC.

  • Research/identify potential volunteers for leadership positions, stewardship events, UCC boards and committees.

  • Organize prospect knowledge, including ratings, interests and linkages, preserving and maintaining data in Raiser’s Edge to develop future cultivation strategies.

  • Serve as administrator of the prospect moves management program for the major gifts program.

  • Provide leadership to fundraising staff in other ministries to identify and develop cultivation plans for leadership prospects.

  • Provide leadership in coordinating efforts in prospect management across the settings of the Church.

  • Collaborate with the staff team and other church leaders as they identify needs and prepare compelling cases for giving.

  • In cooperation with the staff team coordinate development strategies for the United Church of Christ.

  • Respond to inquiries for information and resources as requested by Conferences, congregations and individuals.

  • Serve as the primary research liaison with the variety of national ministries.

  • Promote the program’s positive public image by responding in writing and orally on a timely basis to inquiries for information, accepting speaking engagements, and serving as a resource.

  • Contribute to the effectiveness of work teams by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • A college degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

  • Experience in the philosophy and practice of philanthropy in the non-profit sector and demonstrated ability to work in the area of leadership gifts

  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission, stewardship and philanthropy.

  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ.   

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

  • Ability to maintain and properly handle confidential or sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills.

  • Computer literate in word processing and database management.  Experience with Raiser’s Edge.

  • Limited travel within the United States.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Demonstrated ability in prospect research, research analysis, and moves management within the context of Raiser’s Edge.
