Job Title:  AANM Research Intern (Paid)

Employment Status: Paid Intern (Temporary Full-Time)

Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Research Intern will support the development of the ACCESS Research Initiative, specifically building the online bibliography and increasing access to existing materials through digitization and marketing.

The primary mission of the Museum is to document, preserve and present the history, culture and contributions of Arab American.  The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the United States devoted to Arab American history and culture. Arab Americans have enriched the economic, political and cultural landscape of American life. By bringing the voices and faces of Arab Americans to mainstream audiences, we continue our commitment to dispel misconceptions about Arab Americans and other minorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Compile bibliographic details for published and non-published materials for inclusion in online bibliography, to be developed as part of ACCESS’ national research initiative.

  • Lead oral history collection efforts, including recruitment, recording logistics, editing, transcription, and ensuring the gathering of consent forms and metadata.

  • Use Arabic language skills to support the cataloging of books and archival materials.

  • Increase access to existing collection materials through digitization and marketing.

  • Using inventory data and other research findings, assist in efforts to target new archival collection acquisitions.

  • Support the implementation of the Arab American Studies Association Conference.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • The Arab American community.

  • Original research and writing in the humanities and social sciences areas.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office.

Ability to:

  • Speak and write in English and Arabic.

  • Independently research facts and information.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

Minimum Degree Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Required Disciplines:

  • Arab American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American History, Sociology, Anthropology or Middle Eastern Studies or a related field)

~and~

  • At least 1 year of experience compiling bibliographies and oral history. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Hours:            Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel Required: Local travel may be required.

Working Environment:         Climate controlled office environment during normal business hours.
