Job Title:  Parent Engagement Representative

Employment Status: Part-Time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, uses skills obtained through experience and training to recruit and engage eligible families in programming, and educate parents on early learning content and techniques. Follows established procedures to perform routine tasks and receives general guidance and direction to perform a variety of non-routine tasks with limited decision making responsibility. Resolves most questions and problems, and refers new or unusual issues to a higher level. Routine contact with area schools, businesses, community centers, and houses of worship is required to meet objectives. 

The ACCESS Youth and Education Department aims at enhancing the academic and social development of individuals from preschool age through adulthood.  Academic enrichment, technology instruction, leadership training, adult education programs, and recreational activities are some of the ways we encourage growth and learning throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and screen potential participants for program eligibility. This may include networking within the communities served by the program, cold calling potential participants and following up in person or via telephone. 
  • Identify, establish and maintain relationships with appropriate participant referral sources. Visit referral source locations to recruit, distribute marketing materials, schedule appointments, and do presentations. 
  • Provide potential participants with information regarding the program and its requirements. Schedule potential participants to attend program orientation.
  • Administer pre and post testing of parents and children to determine measurable progress in accordance with program timeline.
  • Translate and interpret information for non-English speaking participants as needed.
  • Maintain agency confidentiality and participants’ privacy. 
  • Assist in organizing family literacy activities and events both in the classroom and in the community. 
  • May conduct presentations, community outreach activities, and awareness campaigns in order to increase recognition and participation. 
  • Document all services in compliance with the agencies quality assurance plan. Report on program progress at required intervals per funding guidelines. 
  • Maintain program policies and procedures per funding guidelines. 
  • May teach various program classes as needed.
  • Assist in organizing activities and/or events in support of program objectives. 
  • Assist in planning and facilitating orientation sessions.
  • Enroll participants into appropriate program activities and monitor progress, ensuring they are engaged in the program. Assist participants in removing barriers to program engagement. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate community resources and other referral sources.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Effective presentation techniques.
  • Community resources and service providers.
  • Basic concepts, practices, and procedures of family literacy programming.

Skill in:

  • Basic Math, reading and writing skills.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office

Ability to:

  • Regularly communicate with other Parent Engagement Representatives, caseworkers and ESL Instructors within the Adult and Family Learning Program
  • Regularly engage and communicate with parents/children within the program as well as keep regular contact with parents/children outside of the program
  • Be in general contact with the staff and faculty at Priest Elementary in Southwest Detroit.
  • Be in contact with community resources and referrals to benefit participant experience and encourage program recruitment.
  • Complete registration documents with all potential program participants.
  • Complete parent and child surveys in accordance with the program guidelines and schedule.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Speak and write in English.  Ability to interpret, speak and write in Arabic or Spanish.
  • Maintain confidentiality of agency and participant information.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

~and~

  • Some experience in program recruitment preferred or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:

  • None; IRB training to be completed upon hire.

Working Conditions:                                         

Hours:  Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel Required: Local travel may be required.

Working Environment:  Climate controlled office environment.
