GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSTION 

The Justice & Witness Ministries of The United Church of Christ is seeking an independent, innovative candidate with a working knowledge of critical race theory. Critical race theory is an analytical lens that recognizes racism is engrained in the fabric and system of the American society and examines existing power structures, based on white privilege and white supremacy, that institutionalize racism and perpetuate the marginalization of people of color.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a comprehensive and strategic approach and curriculum for racial justice which includes a short-term and long-range racial justice program plan that engages all settings of UCC to dismantle racism in church and society.

     

  • Work with staff colleagues in the national setting to explore and understand the intersection of racial justice with other justice issues (i.e. human rights, environmental justice, public education, criminal justice, etc.).

     

  • Coordinate the ongoing work of the current church-wide initiative, Sacred Conversation on Race, which includes collaboration with national staff persons, conference and local congregations, and UCC trainers and facilitators.

     

  • Coordinate the development of new resources that will engage all settings of the UCC, ecumenical, and interfaith partners in the study of racism and related dynamics such as white privilege, internalized racism, individual and systemic racism, etc.

     

  • Represent JWM and the national setting of the UCC in all settings of the UCC, ecumenically, and in interfaith settings as appropriately related to this portfolio.

     

  • Provide leadership within JWM, General Synod, and other settings of the church as appropriate in developing public policy positions and making policy statements on issues of racial justice.

     

  • Develop and nurture ecumenical and interfaith partnerships on racial justice.

     

  • Serve as lead JWM coordinator for Synod resolutions where issues of racial equity are present.

     

  • Demonstrate theological understanding of racial justice in both verbal and written articulation of our mission in its broad range of concerns.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, graduate degree highly preferred.

     

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in race conscious work.

     

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the United Church of Christ, its history and polity especially its commitment to prophetic ministry in the church and society.

     

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including some forms of published thought.

     

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to broaden the understanding of racial justice that includes the broader diversity of race and ethnicity.

     

  • Demonstrated skills in social and cultural analysis, particularly in the areas of race and racism.

     

  • Ability to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious settings with a demonstrated commitment to pluralism in the workplace.

     

  • Ability to develop and maintain healthy relationships with persons representing a wide variety of racial and ethnic realities and perspectives.

     

  • Demonstrated written and verbal language skills in English including teaching and public speaking.

     

  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively.

     

  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.
