Senior Human Resources Business Partner

SUMMARY 

Serves as a senior member of the Woodland Park Zoo Human Resources team.  Functions as a resource and mentor to other members of the HR team. This position provides strategic support across all HR disciplines and requires expert knowledge of employee relations, organization development, employee engagement, culture change, staffing, compensation, benefits, HRIS, performance management, training, employee recognition, policies and procedures, employment regulations; problem resolution, facilitation, and some labor relations.  Partners with senior leaders, middle management and staff to resolve complex people issues that impact the productivity and effectiveness of the organization.  Drives HR projects around organizational effectiveness and leadership development. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partners with the Vice President on various projects requiring senior-level HR skills, independently executing project plans, shepherding the project through to completion, providing post-implementation support.

  • Advises employees and managers on a broad range of subjects, providing coaching and counsel on employee relations, policies, procedures, employment handbook provisions, and collective bargaining agreement.

  • Proactively assists with recommendations regarding workforce and employment issues. Advises department and managers for areas needing changes or improvements.

  • Consults with employees and managers regarding wages, hours, work rules and specific requirements of ADA, FLSA, FMLA, WISHA/OSHA, EEO, NLRA, etc.

  • Conducts investigations around employment issues, working to successfully resolve issues keeping in mind risk management and employee morale.Works with management on appropriate solutions.Writes reports and other written materials as required.

  • Provides authentic feedback and coaching to leaders and managers, offering both constructive and appreciative feedback on behaviors, decisions, individual effectiveness, competencies and personal development; drive changes in management behavior to support a culture of accountability and performance.

  • Develops and delivers leadership training plans and programs.

  • Supports the VP of Human Resources in developing strategies and ongoing programs to further strategic priorities of human resources and the zoo.

  • Manages the annual performance management process. Facilitates calibration and compensation discussion with senior management.

  • Advises employees and managers on compensation issues and questions. Analyzes salary survey information and makes recommendations regarding levels and pay grades.

  • Consults with managers on appropriate selection of job classifications and developing new or revised job descriptions.

  • Supports collective bargaining negotiations and document agreements.

  • Oversees employee recognition programs and other mission-focused “Our People” initiatives.

  • Promotes Woodland Park Zoo Core Values, team building, and employee wellness initiatives.

  • Handles confidential information in an appropriately professional and respectful manner.

  • Maintains excellent workplace relationships. Strives for the highest levels of customer service. Responds to emails and phone calls in a professional and timely manner.

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations in order to keep abreast of the latest trends in the organization development field.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Solid understanding of business and how strategic HR programs support new and ongoing initiatives.

  • A desire to help people combined with demonstrated experience of effectively managing personnel and employment matters.Expert knowledge of multiple human resources areas.

  • Strong compliance knowledge of federal and state employment laws including ADA, FLSA, FMLA, WISHA/OSHA, EEO, COBRA, and NLRA.

  • Thorough understanding of HRIS systems and applications.

  • Strong Microsoft Office computer suite skills, including Word, PowerPoint, and basic Excel. Working knowledge of HRIS databases such as Ascentis and SilkRoad is very desirable.

  • Experience with unions and collective bargaining a plus.

  • Self-directed project management skills. Efficient and detail oriented. Demonstrated skills for multi-tasking.

  • Strong interpersonal and written communications skills. Ability to speak in front of groups and convey information effectively. Personable, with ability to positively motivate others.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.S or B.A.) or a Masters Degree (M.A.) in Human Resources Management or a related business field from an accredited college or university; and 8+ years human resources experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Washington State Driver License.

  • PHR, SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification desirable.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient in MS Office applications (e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).  Working knowledge of Ascentis, PeopleSoft, or other HRIS systems.  Also experience with performance management programs such as SilkRoad’s WingSpan or other program is highly desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as human resource policies, payroll procedures, and safety materials; operating and maintenance instructions; and other procedure manuals. Ability to analyze and write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to draft and present training materials. Ability to effectively present verbal information. Good knowledge of business English, spelling and grammar.

MATHEMATICAL ABILity

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to evaluate compensation and benefit plans and prepare basic statistical summaries and reports. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre facility in variable weather conditions, enter non-public areas and occasionally climb stairs or ladders in behind the scenes staff areas. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. Human resources work can involve the ability to listen and help manage emotional or stressful personnel issues.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. The regular scheduled hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8-5; evening and weekends on occasion if needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a typical office environment with moderate noise levels. The workspace may be open, informal and communal in nature with the accompanying distractions of co-worker traffic and employee conversations.
