SUMMARY

The Education Programs Coordinator oversees the coordination of all aspects of the classes and camps offered by the Education Department. The programs include our Zoo Adventures program (overnights), senior classes, scout classes, summer and off-season camps, etc. The Coordinator’s primary duties will be program development, acquisition and maintenance of program supplies, preparation of printed materials and website information, client contact, and instructor and volunteer training. This position requires evening and weekend work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of educational camps, classes (such as our Zoo Adventures [overnights] programs, Senior and Scout classes, etc.), education programs, projects and protocols
  • Serve as lead staff for instructors and volunteers within the Child and Family Programs team
  • Schedule programs, staff, volunteers and resources for education classes and camps
  • Handle and present a variety of species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods.
  • Coordinate, develop and facilitate trainings for staff and volunteers 
  • Coordinate, research, development, revision and dissemination of program/project  supporting materials and interpretive elements
  • Organize and maintain program  props, materials and supply inventories
  • Support supervisory team in maintenance of internal and external partnerships
  • Present engaging programs, experiences and activities to audiences of all ages on and off zoo grounds. 
  • Evaluate programs, interpretive elements, and provide feedback to Instructors and volunteers
  • Collect and report statistics and prepare reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Possess general knowledge of zoology, ecology and conservation
  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which includes weekends and evenings

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in natural science, environmental education, early childhood education or related field from an accredited four-year college or university; or four to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Washington State Driver's License.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient and experienced with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Must be able to work with customized databases and technology, and conduct Internet research.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to communicate clearly and completely both verbally and in writing.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre institution in variable weather conditions, enter non-public areas and occasionally climb stairs or ladders in behind-the-scenes staff areas. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, while lifting equipment or setting up podium area. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The vision requirements are based on the required ability to identify animals or places for media, and having to be aware of location in relation to animals as well as media.
