Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSTIONTo oversee the operation of Financial Services of the United Church of Christ, and to serve as Treasurer of the United Church of Christ Board, the covenanted ministries, and other related organizations.  The CFO is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and other regulatory and advisory organizations in accordance with financial management techniques and best practices.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Oversee the overall operation and supervision of Financial Services, including assuring that monthly financial reports, wire transfers and check authorizations are completed accurately, timely and in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Review monthly financial reports and report regularly to the Collegium of Officers on the financial health of the covenanted ministries, the Office of General Minister and President, Common Services, LCM Church Building & Loan Fund, UCC Hotel Venture LLC and 700 Prospect Corporation, and make recommendations to ensure responsible and sound budget, spending, and investment practices.
  • Serve as the Treasurer of the United Church of Christ Board, Local Church Ministries, Justice Witness Ministries, Wider Church Ministries, Common Services Corporation, LCM Church Building & Loan Fund, UCC Hotel Venture LLC, and 700 Prospect Corporation.
  • Review contracts under consideration and assess their financial implications, as needed. 
  • Review budgets for major events to ensure consistency with overall financial resources and priorities. 
  • Develop/Recommend and administer standardized fiscal policies and procedures as presented to and approved by the Boards of Directors.
  • Supervise the Controllers.  Provide financial resource support to Executive Ministers and at meetings representing Financial Services as requested.
  • Provide staff support to Finance Committee(s) of the United Church of Christ Board and related organizations.
  • Prepare and present financial reports for General Synod.
  • Compile and report Biennial Budget for General Synod, work with ministries on timely and accurate reports for the Annual Report.  
  • Remain current on accounting methodology and financial information systems technology.
  • Maintain banking relationships including arranging for lines of credit/other borrowing, depositories for funds and temporarily investing funds for the UCC.
  • Oversee and Coordinate the annual UCC Audit, including compilation of the Audit Report and other analysis as required.
  • Resource Boards of Directors and Conference Ministers as appropriate
  • Maintain custody of any United Church of Christ investments held in physical form for the Covenanted Ministries.
  • Contract for services for annual audit, payroll services and other accounting services as needed.
  • Serve as a member of designated staff groups including Mission Planning Council and the President’s Cabinet. 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the General Minister and President; other needs by Collegium members will be responded to as needed and appropriate.  

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overall supervision and oversight of staff in Financial Services
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Advanced degree in accounting/finance or 10 to 15 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; extensive knowledge of and experience in not-for-profit, generally accepted accounting principles, fund accounting operation and supervision.
  • Financial acumen, well-grounded in accounting and administration
  • Extensive managerial experience in a culturally diverse work setting a plus
  • Ability to work in team settings, using supervisory and conflict management skill
  • Flexibility in managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Collegiality, fostering climate of respect for diversity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Church leaders, auditors, bankers and legal counsel
  • Computer systems skills, in particular: spreadsheet (Quattro Pro, Excel), MS Word and Outlook, and database management (Filemaker Pro, Raiser’s Edge).
  • Knowledge of the United Church of Christ

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA status preferred.
