The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for day-to-day care and counseling of at-risk teens with special needs in a residential treatment program. The Mental Health Counselor provides high quality care and ensures the safety of residents, staff, and site in accordance with policy, helping to implement the treatment/behavior plans for each resident in collaboration with an experienced multidisciplinary team. The Mental Health Counselor also dispenses medications when needed, helps residents to tend to their health and wellness, and may help residents to manage their schedule or attend outside appointments or activities. Participants have complex needs, and the Mental Health Counselor builds relationships with them and their families in a supportive environment that utilizes a strengths-based, culturally competent, trauma-informed approach and values compassion, respect, diversity, and accountability.
Additionally, Fred Finch provides opportunities for professional development through both elective and mandatory on-site continuing education trainings, individual supervision, and clinical discussions in group settings. Fred Finch also encourages participation in agency committees that allow clinicians to contribute to critical areas of focus within the organization such as cultural responsiveness in serving diverse populations, quality improvement to ensure best practices in service delivery, and integrating trauma informed care practices within the agency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Client Care & Supervision: 1) Actively supervise general care & safety of residents and instruct their program participation by providing a consistent, nurturing environment with clear expectations and limits; 2) assist in the development & implementation of positive behavioral interventions and in the implementation of treatment plan goals; 3) participate in supporting residents’ progress through attending groups, treatment reviews, special staffings; 4) provide transportation for residents to any off-campus activities, medical appointments, or family therapy as needed; 5) act as primary counselor to several residents assigned and carry out all functions of primary counselor duties; 6) assist in the team approach to planning & implementing program needs of recreational, skills building and community integration activities.
Documentation: 1) Complete all paperwork; such as logging, daily progress notes, incident reports, and any other paper work as assigned in a timely manner.
Training: 1) Attend and participate in all agency and licensing mandated staff meetings, in-service trainings, PROACT., first aide/CPR, medication, and all other trainings as assigned.
Medication: 1) Supervise residents’ daily heath needs, communicating and health concerns to the Medical Services Coordinator, Nurse or House Supervisor, as well as dispense and monitor residents’ medication.
Safety: 1) Report any unsatisfactory conditions in the care and upkeep of the house to the House Supervisor and/or Maintenance.
Policy & Procedure: 1) Exhibit clear knowledge of overall program operations as stated in the operations manual as well as an understanding of the general agency policies and carry these out.
Other Duties: 1) May drive on Agency business as required 2) Other duties as delegated.
