Schedule 8:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Possibility of shift adjustment on certain days to handle property releases. Schedule may vary based on departmental need.  
Pay Rate $14.42-$15.62/hr. (Non-Exempt)  
Description

SUMMARY
This positions assists the Manager of Property and Evidence in maintaining an organized, restricted, secure area that houses personal property, case evidence and illegal drugs. This person will process all items from the time the officers turn in the property/evidence, thru the chain of custody to dissemination. Interactions with officers, prosecutor's office, lab, other law enforcement agencies, civilians, etc., on a daily basis. Knowledge of state and federal laws that pertain to Property & Evidence will be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Assists in maintaining evidentiary chain of custody and integrity of all evidence and property logged into the police department's property areas.
• Maintains all databases for proper tracking.
• Assists in maintaining organized records and placement of all evidence and property.
• Conducts ongoing reviews and audits of evidence and property to ensure integrity of the system.
• Processes property & evidence auctions for unclaimed items.
• Assists the Manager in researching cases; data base, prosecutor's office, officers and other entities.
• Destroys/returns/disseminates or assists in the destruction of property or evidence in accordance with State Law and Court Order.
• Releases property or evidence or oversees its release to its lawful recipient.
• Assists in taking photos of all property and evidence prior to destruction.
• Cleans and maintains proper hygiene in and around evidence areas.
• Provides clerical support.

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists with special projects as assigned.

 
Position Requirements QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Ability to type 40 or more (40+) words per minute.
• Ability to problem solve and communicate with other employees and members of the public.
• Ability to learn or knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and other departmental software applications relevant to evidence and property records keeping.
• Ability to occasionally lift or move items that weigh up to one hundred (100) pounds.
• The position may require successful passing of an evidence custodian or legal chain of custody course. Good customer service is a must.
• Knowledge of Law Enforcement rules and regulations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Driver's License.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, stoop, bend and lift, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with the hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. On limited occasions, portions of the required work may be located outdoors, and require the employee to walk or stand for periods. The job may occasionally require the employee to handle biohazard objects and contaminated evidence. Some items handled may be sharp, hazardous, or slippery. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Much of the work is performed in a warehouse like environment. The work involves handling of boxes/bags that have been stored and contain dust and other residue. There are areas that involve cold temperatures. The drug evidence area has an odor that may be overwhelming at times. The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet; however certain duties may expose the employee to loud noise levels.
