Oral History Collections Summer Intern

The Academy Oral History Projects Department (http://www.oscars.org/oral-history/about) invites moving image archive studies or library science graduate students to apply for the Oral History Collections summer internship.
We are seeking an organized, enthusiastic intern to assist the Oral History Projects department in the development of a large preservation and access initiative specifically for oral histories with filmmakers. The focus will be in preparing audiovisual interviews that have been deposited at the Academy Film Archive for future access.  For more information on these collections, please visit http://www.oscars.org/oral-history/collections.
 

Supervised by the Manager of Oral History Projects and working in collaboration with the OHP Archivist/Coordinator & temporary Project Archivist, the intern will focus on projects that include: collection processing, interview logging and metadata capture, and organization of related material such as transcripts, images, clips, and interview summaries.

The intern will also have the opportunity to provide input into project development, specifically, the Motion Picture Oral History Digital Archive (MPOHDA), and the creation of a controlled vocabulary specific to film industry-related interviews. This position offers the opportunity to learn the functional and operational aspects of an archival oral history initiative.

Duties may include:
- Assisting Project Archivist with assessing and processing collections
- Inventory of access copies of audiovisual materials
- Gathering images and highlight clips
- Photo cataloging and curation
- Drafting interview summaries, abstracts and bios
- Interview logging and indexing
- Assisting with organization of controlled vocabulary terms
- Testing oral history metadata/indexing tools for future use
- Writing collection profiles and Academy Collection blogs

About OHP:
The Academy Oral History Projects (OHP) department records, collects and preserves personal spoken accounts that provide insight into the art, science and craft of motion picture creation. The department is actively bringing together more than 900 dispersed oral history interviews (totaling over 4,135 hours) about filmmaking craft by providing storage, cataloging, and preservation through the Academy Film Archive. To make these collections more accessible to researchers and the general public, materials are being prepared for inclusion in a Motion Picture Oral History Digital Archive (MPOHDA), where they will be indexed and accessed through a web-based portal.

This internship is based at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study in Hollywood, the intern will need access to reliable transportation to Hollywood.

The intern will be expected to commit 28 hrs. per week from approximately June 6 - August 19, 2016.

 
Position Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a Moving Image Archives studies or Library and Information Science Graduate Program
  • If you are currently enrolled in a Film Studies program you must have cataloging and writing experience in a previous internship/job or volunteer position
  • OHP interns should have strong written and oral communication skills, be highly organized and show attention to detail
  • Candidates should have an interest in oral history and a solid knowledge of film history and archival theory
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in moving image archiving, film studies, or library and information studies programs
