Project Geologist - On-Call

Description

 The project level engineering geologist’s primary role will be to assist professional staff with specific duties typically related to the evaluation of geologic work plans, recommendations for geologic investigative techniques, oversee and/or conduct field activities, as well as review and analyze geologic reports. These duties may include activities such as project planning, site specific investigations and designs as related to geologic structure, construction observation of critical structures and essential services buildings, and geologic hazard evaluations. Extensive use of computers is expected to perform various analyses, prepare reports and graphics, and review field data. At the Project level, the engineering geologist will be expected to perform difficult engineering and geologic work. They may also be used in the role of task/field manager on more complex projects or in a lead capacity supervising professional staff. This role is primarily a field position to support both pre-construction and construction monitoring services and will require extensive travel throughout North and South America. Professional registration is also required for this position.

Duties:

  • Geologic surface mapping, rock and soil subsurface investigations, installation of downhole instrumentation, construction monitoring, and other field based geologic tasks.
  • Operate technical instruments, track test results, and troubleshoot when issues arise
  • Maintain equipment, including ordering parts and directing or performing preventative and repair maintenance as needed
  • Maintain logs and write daily activity reports
  • Perform duties in locations from urban to remote, travel domestically and internationally.
  • Field work typically involves long working hours, with extended travel time and will be completed in all weather conditions.
  • Complete data analysis and reporting of results in a written technical report format.
  • Activities will include data input, generating summary tables and graphs and authoring text associated with literature review, field activities and summarizing data results along with other duties as assigned. Applicant will be proficient with MS Office Suite and be motivated, a self-starter and have good time and budget management skills to meet deadlines. Experience with DIPS, gINT, AutoCAD and GIS software is desirable.
  • Create and/or review technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, or specifications
  • Exhibit good verbal and written skills, providing concise technical summaries of field and laboratory data and manage/direct subcontractor activities effectively. Interaction with clients will be frequent and professional conduct is required.
  • Assist in developing standard work practices and procedures
  • Training junior staff on basic and complex standard field protocols
  • Looks for opportunities to develop and improve on existing processes
  • No relocation necessary at this level but should be within 1 hour of major airport.  Career advancement may require relocation.
 
Position Requirements
  • BS or MS in Geology (or related field).
  • Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a geologist, CA preferred
  • Knowledge of stratigraphic, structural, historical, and economic geology as related to civil engineering projects
  • Knowledge of subsurface exploration and sampling techniques
  • Knowledge of aerial photography and geologic mapping
  • Knowledge of grouting methods, techniques, and equipment
  • Ability to work on assignments that are complex in nature requiring sound judgement and initiative to resolve issues and make recommendations
  • Ability to conduct geologic investigations
  • Ability to conduct independent technical research
  • Interest and availability to travel for up to or more than 30 days at a time, both internationally and domestically
  • Ability to traverse rough and occasionally steep terrain and work long hours
  • Minimum 5 years working experience
  • Interest in long-term career development in geology with eventual project management responsibilities
  • Excel under low to moderate supervision and able to maximize efficiency in both field and office settings
  • Ability to learn new skills and work on a variety of tasks as the job requires
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as construction drawings and specifications, policy manuals, safety rules, procedure manuals, etc.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts related to probability and statistics, geometry, algebra, and trigonometry
  • Ability to use mechanical and test equipment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workflow at an advanced level in order to meet project timelines
  • Ability to write routine and complex technical reports and correspondence
  • Types of projects will include civil construction, corridor alignments (existing and proposed), mining, and quarry evaluations with an emphasis on the engineering geology of the project.
