Description

The California Department of Public Health and Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc. (PHFE) invite applications for a full-time Microbiologist position for the Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Herpesvirus Section at the Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory (VRDL).  A bachelor’s degree in a biological science and a Public Health Microbiologist certificate are required.  The position is located in Richmond, CA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform, interpret, and report complex diagnostic and reference tests for viral vaccine preventable diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella and VZV, according to established SOPs in a timely manner. Testing platforms include real-time PCR, genotyping, and enzyme immunoassays
  • Validate and implement CDC protocols and commercial assays as needed
  • Assist in archiving viral isolates and performing cell culture work
  • Participate in bi-monthly conference calls with APHL, CDC and staff responsible for the project
  • Maintain laboratory records and reagents
  • Maintain electronic databases of specimens and laboratory results

 

 
Position Requirements

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience performing nucleic acid extractions and real-time PCR
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and standard precautions for working with viruses and potentially infectious clinical specimens
  • Ability to perform micromanipulations such as pipetting small volumes and other fine measurements using laboratory equipment
  • Ability to work independently to develop, evaluate and apply highly specialized procedures
  • Demonstrated attention to detail

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, STARLiMS, email)
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to varied work settings
  • Ability to work effectively with a team of diverse individuals

Education/Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in a biological science from an accredited university with course work in chemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology is required
  • Previous experience with genetic sequencing is highly desirable

Certificates/Licenses/Clearances

  • California Public Health Microbiologist license is required
