Program Design

As a congressionally-chartered national nonprofit organization, NeighborWorks America's mission is to reverse the decline in America's neighborhoods, strengthen communities, build sustainable partnerships and increase the supply of safe and affordable housing. NeighborWorks America is interested in finding exceptional people who have the skills needed to meet our future employment needs.

Through a variety of programs, NeighborWorks America's Community Scholars Summer Internship Program is designed to help recruit and attract talented individuals to occupations within NeighborWorks America. The program offers interns professional experiences and formal training opportunities that can be adapted to meet the Intern's educational and professional goals and interests. NeighborWorks America's Intern Program provides an opportunity to earn money, and train with people who manage the day-to-day business of our organization. The Community Scholars Program provides paid 12 week internships beginning in June, 2016. The program offers:

  • A broader perspective on how the organization serves the community and the nation as a whole.
  • The opportunity to acquire specific skills that are needed to pursue their professional goals and aspirations.
  • The opportunity for hands-on work experience in their field of study or interest.

Examples of Projects/Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Interviewing executive directors of community development organizations on workforce development challenges they face, then researching recruitment and retention programs across different business sectors;
  • Collecting census data on metro and non-metro statistics and creating an 8-10 page booklet describing persistent poverty in urban and rural parts of the Mississippi Delta and/or Appalachia
  • Creating a strategic plan for reaching out to Spanish-speaking practitioners using focus groups, surveys, and identification of partners;
  • Attending and reporting on Congressional hearings;
  • Researching state and federal regulations/legislation on resident services funding;
  • Researching, benchmarking, and providing recommendations to identified personnel policies and the Human Resources orientation program.
 
Position Requirements

Active enrollment in undergraduate or graduate program is required.

Each selected intern must be available the entire 12 weeks through August 22, 2016.
