Description

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to efficiently and effectively organize, develop, and administer the financial services of the institution. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a member of the Senior Staff, and is responsible for strategically leveraging PAFA’s resources to ensure financial success. Functions supervised by this position include fiscal and business i.e. accounting, payroll, budget, insurance, debt, investments, cash, and safety and security. The CFO has five direct reports. The CFO must relate well to the diversity of faculty, staff and students, and to the unique needs of the museum and school. The CFO must be committed to team work, excellent customer services and creative leadership. Works closely with and acts as the liaison to the Finance, Audit, Investment, and Technology Committees.

PAFA’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the effective conduct of the financial affairs of PAFA and assists the institution in strategically leveraging resources to achieve its artistic mission and improve institutional effectiveness. This position plans, directs and evaluates the financial operations including budget formulation and management, accounting and financial reporting, procurement and contracts management, risk management, debt services, investments, and cash management.

Key responsibilities of the position include serving as the chief advisor to the President on strategic matters related to the financial operations of the institution, participating as a member of PAFA’s Senior Staff by providing support for budgeting and financial services, collaborating effectively with other PAFA leaders and teams on critical and/or complex financial problems with the goal of developing effective solutions. This position serves as the Finance Department’s primary position to direct all general ledger accounting functions, cash management, endowment accounting, payroll, tax reporting and compliance, fixed asset accounting, student billing/student receivables, accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial reporting issues, as well as supervision of all daily departmental activities. The CFO prepares the organization for its year-end close, including the organization of data in advance of the annual audit, serves as the primary contact for the organization’s independent auditor, oversees the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities PAFA, including information for the Board of Trustees, Commonwealth and Federal Government, and other external entities. The CFO will prepare information and schedules for Internal Revenue Service Form 990, track expenses related to grant funding in order to appropriately recognize grant revenues, and work in conjunction with our Development department with respect to grant reporting to insure the organization is in compliance with all internal policies and relevant regulations, and insures that all required filings are completed in a timely manner. The CFO manages the Payroll function, insuring the creation of efficient systems, processes, and controls. This position coordinates the planning, development and implementation of innovative approaches to fiscal management using technology, data management or analysis to support the PAFA’s mission. This position develops and maintains the PAFA’s risk management program, including the oversight of institutional insurance coverage and claims, risk management analyses and planning. In coordination with the President and CEO, Dean of the School, and Dean of Enrollment makes recommendations for tuition increases and fee schedule for incoming class. In coordination with President and CEO, Dean of the School, and the Dean of Students, the CFO makes recommendations for costs for student housing and associated fees. In coordination with Dean of Admissions and Director of Financial Aid, the CFO closely monitors and approves financial aid awards and scholarships in accordance with budget. The CFO represents PAFA at a variety of meetings, committees, and conferences addressing financial operations of the museum and school, including acting as the staff liaison for the finance, investment and audit committees – scheduling, preparing agendas and minutes for committee meetings. The CFO also oversee the technology strategy and resources for PAFA, which encompasses business systems, educational technology, marketing technology, and museum visitor engagement through technology.

 
Position Requirements

Qualified candidates will have the ability to work and lead effectively in a collegial and participatory manner emphasizing team-building with all segments of the campus community. Effectively analyze problems, determine solutions, and take decisive action leading to successful outcomes. The ability to anticipate conditions and plan ahead to overcome challenges or capitalize on opportunities.Track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with the business community and administrative and executive offices of the state and system. Demonstrated ability to develop, analyze and implement effective and innovative budget, financial and/or administrative strategies. Evidence of being innovative and creative, particularly related to solving complex business and financial problems that lead to goal attainment, cost-savings, revenue generation, or other types of innovation. Ability to effectively collaborate with other executives, leaders and teams to achieve organizational goals. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and coach as an employee supervisor. A commitment to and understanding of the mission of PAFA. Bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or relevant degree required. Master's degree in a related field, preferred. Demonstrated experience in employee supervision and performance management and five years of professional experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in areas such as finance, organizational management, education administration, etc. Experience working in an educational environment preferred.
