GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:  Serve as principle executive reporting to the General Minister and President. Offer critical advice on strategic initiatives and provide essential day-to-day administrative support as the primary information resource regarding matters related to the President’s Office. Support the strategic integration, implementation and promotion of initiatives in the GMP Office. Facilitate strategic collaboration among National and Conference settings to ensure overall implementation of a cohesive UCC vision plan. Advise the GMP and provide extensive professional assistance and recommendations on UCC matters.

 

Enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the General Minister and President’s Office. The success of this role demands a strong office presence. Must have the ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, listen carefully, multi-task, give attention to details and organization, and communicate efficiently. The position requires an extremely high level of professionalism sound and mature judgment, and collegiality.  Must have the proven ability to advise senior leaders effectively, proven success in developing collaborative relationships across diverse constituencies as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Advise the GMP on matters related to the UCC, including unresolved issues that must be addressed.

  • Coordinate the resource availability for change agents.

  • Providing critical support to the GMP in the development of a strategic/tactical initiative for the denomination.

  • Direct communications for the GMP Office including routine emails, speaking requests, and requests for information. Work with GMP and Executive Assistant to ensure effective and efficient systems, processes, and checklists to manage the large volume of communications coming into the GMP Office.Handle press relations for the GMP Office.

  • Work in a coordinated manner with the Executive Assistant on scheduling, meeting and event planning, travel plans, projects and other routine day-to-day activities.

  • Develop initial draft responses to correspondence as needed

  • Develop initial draft issue statements

  • Works with the GMP and the Chief Finance Officer on preparation of annual budget.

  • Promote the overall objectives of the GMP though strategic planning including agenda recommendations for Mission Planning Council and the United Church Board of Directors.

  • Serve on and staff the GMP’s Leadership Team, ensuring follow-through on action items.Work directly with Leadership Team on day-to-day issues, special projects and urgent problems to design solutions and implement programs.

  • Review proposed policies and procedures to advise the GMP on adoption and/or implementation.

  • Assure implementation of programs developed and initiated by the GMP.

  • Ensures that the GMP has support materials for all meetings.

  • Coordinate and oversee special projects and special events

  • Interact with senior staff across the covenanted ministries in order to inform the GMP on various initiatives and special projects.

  • Coordinate with PIC on the production of regularly scheduled GMP videos

  • Coordinate the GMP’s speaking and presentation engagements with PIC and OPS to maximize publicity and fund development opportunities.

  • Manage preparation and follow-up for the GMP’s engagement with various working groups, such as those related to General Synod Resolutions.

  • Ensure appropriate follow up of all tasks assigned to the GMP, including General Synod and United Church Board requests.

  • In conjunction with and under the direction of the GMP, will assist in the adherence of National Setting policies, including HR policies, regarding the office GMP staff.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, preferably in such areas as divinity, sociology, or MBA.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively executing work in an executive office.

  • Must be accurate and detail-oriented with outstanding organizational abilities.

  • Ability to take initiative and use sound judgment to reach logical conclusions in non-routine matters.

  • Ability to multi-task in an environment of frequent interruptions.

  • A clear understanding and experience with handling confidential information and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Member of a local church of the United Church of Christ, preferred

  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns; ability to articulate and witness to one’s faith perspective.

  • Ability to work with non-UCC leaders in social justice areas, ecumenical leaders of other Christian denominations and religious leaders of all faith traditions. 

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ.

  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity from a biblical/theological perspective.

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print resources; public speaking skills and knowledge of a second language when applicable.

  • Demonstrated administrative skills.

  • Competency in leadership planning, development and training.

  • Proven computer and software use skills, especially MS Office Suite.

  • Ability to travel as necessary.
