Job Title:  Communications Specialist II (AANM)    

Employment Status: Full-Time

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary Year in 2015-2016, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the only museum of its kind among the 21,000 cultural institutions in the United States. The AANM documents, preserves and presents the history, culture and contributions of Arab Americans.  At the same time, the Museum promotes respect for Arab Americans and all Americans – regardless of ethnic heritage – by shedding light on the shared experiences of immigrants and the value of a diverse society. In its brief life, the AANM has earned Accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. It has distinguished itself as a highly successful institution, as evidenced by funder and audience support; national awards for its leaders and programs, and ability to produce original exhibitions and tour them nationally. AANM holds the single-largest collection of research materials about Arab Americans, and in addition to its permanent exhibits produces a robust schedule of temporary exhibitions of art and culture; public programs including concerts, films and panel discussions; and educational offerings including guided group tours, culinary walking tours, music and language lessons, and cultural competency training for businesses, governments and other entities. In short, AANM prides itself on building and serving the community through the arts.

Job Summary: Under administrative direction from the AANM communications manager, uses advanced skills gained through training and experience to address the organization’s image, making it more relevant, increasing external positive perceptions, and attracting new and diverse audiences. Maintains organization’s brand integrity and continually promotes the mission through preparation and distribution of print and electronic materials, fact sheets, news releases, photographs, scripts, video and audio recordings to media, external stakeholders and the general public. Utilizes knowledge of the communities that the agency serves, changing attitudes and opinions of clients, employees or other interest groups to promote goodwill through various publicity efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the agency, in the event that the AANM manager of communications is unavailable.

  • Develop and refine core messaging and compelling narratives to improve the effectiveness of the organization and its various program areas.

  • Develop and execute marketing campaigns that support museum strategies and tactics through the use of direct mail, print and online advertising, email, social media, and live events.

  • Manage multiple projects by developing project schedules, coordinating with cross-functional teams, charting milestones, and tracking the success to optimize future campaigns.

  • Identify and cultivate new audiences, new media relationships, new outlets and new strategies to support the organization.

  • Proactively engage, cultivate and manage media relationships and serve as the second point of contact for all media interactions, and arranging for other senior staff members to responds as needed.

  • Support AANM communications manager with the drafting of speeches, presentations, articles, and other strategic communications.

  • Develop and conduct media trainings for identified agency staff.

  • Facilitate and manage relationships with key journalists, community organizations and other stakeholders.

  • Maintain media contact lists.

  • Plan and execute all communication activities prior to, at and following various events, including annual gala, fundraisers, and other large/formal events.

  • Supervise distribution of select printed materials including direct mail, exhibit cards, and program materials.

  • Manage maintenance of clip files, photo archives and other publication archives.

  • Provides public relations, marketing and communications guidance and implementation to a specific line of business.

  • May participate in line of business meetings with department management in order to partner and provide marketing and communication guidance.

  • Operate standard office equipment and uses required software applications.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Promotions and marketing strategies and activities

  • Intermediate concepts, principles and practices of public relations

  • Public speaking protocols.

  • Basic project management ability with relation to organizing and facilitating agency events.

  • Media venues and marketing including social media.

  • Types of stories and information of interest to journalists

  • Local, national, and international media outlets

  • Arab/Middle Eastern culture and languages a plus

  • Surrounding communities that agency serves

  • AP style

  • Libel and slander laws

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop

  • Operating electronic media publishing software including Web 2.0

  • Operating audio/visual equipment may be required based on assigned functional area

  • HTML coding and editing software may be required based on assigned functional area

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Maintain AANM brand integrity throughout all work performed.

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.

  • Gather information, identify linkages and trends and apply findings to assignments.

  • Incite enthusiasm and influence, motivate and persuade others to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships both within the organization and with external partners, specifically community partners.

  • Should be able to persuasively market and communicate through a variety of print and online media.

  • Should be able to understand and identify local, national and international issues impacting the vision and mission of the organization and to represent the organization’s position.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

Minimum Degree Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
  • Marketing, Journalism, Communications or a related field

Working Conditions:

Hours:            Normal business hours.  Availability outside of normal business hours, including some nights and weekends.

Travel Required: local travel may be required.

Working Environment:         Climate controlled office environment.
