POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

The Foreman Level 1 is responsible for developing and maintaining a good working relationship with the RDC General Contracting group , Sub Contracting Partners and all other RDC departments (Mechanical, Operations, IT, ISD, Safety, Security) working on the project.  The Foreman Level 1 is also responsible for coordinating schedules with the RDC General Contracting Group, Sub Contracting Partners and various departments within RDC.

The Foreman Level 1 coordinates with all electrical journeymen and apprentices under his/her direction. The Foreman Level 1 will also be responsible for the development of all Journeymen Leads, Journeyman, apprentices and material handlers in the electrical construction of RDC projects under his charge. They will also be dealing with Architects, Engineers, and Designers, both in-house and third party. It is the Foreman Level 1's responsibility to develop and maintain a good working relationship with these people and to represent the company by showing respect and belief in the common goal of everyone and to get the job done on time and within budget.

This position needs to have the ability to read and understand construction drawings, plans, and specifications and have knowledge of construction sequencing as well as scheduling capabilities and familiarity with MS Project scheduling software.

Foreman Level 1 must be able to take direction from their supervisor and then be able to delegate those duties to all others.  They must have the ability to communicate with others and be capable of giving directions in a way that others will understand.  The Foreman Level 1 will work closely with the Lead Foreman and Superintendent of Electrical construction, Lead Foremen and Project Managers in planning the project, tasking labor, estimating, assembling material lists and coordinating subcontractor work for construction projects. Regular, predictable attendance is essential for satisfactory job performance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reports job progress and problems to management regularly, accurately, and objectively.
  • Studies and understands electrical, architectural, structural, and mechanical plans. Plans well in advance how to avoid space conflicts with the other trades.
  • Keeps plans and specifications up to date with revisions made on the job.
  • Anticipates what work others will be doing and frequently verifies the general contractor's schedule and changes to plan work accordingly.
  • Keeps a harmonious working relationship with other contractors and their employees and coordinates the electrical work with their work to avoid doing anything over or losing time for any of the other trades.
  • Completes a task analysis for the upcoming one to two weeks and determines the amount of manpower required to complete the tasks.
  • Knows the approximate estimated time that was budgeted to do each task, and whether it can be done most efficiently with one worker, two, or a larger crew.
  • Plans and lays out the work so that it will comply with the specifications and codes, can be installed with the least interference to and from other trades, and will make the most efficient and uniform use of manpower, tools, and equipment throughout the job.
  • Anticipates as far in advance as possible the need to increase or decrease the work force. Advises the Superintendent of crew’s tentative schedule of manpower needs and changes in the schedule as promptly as they can be determined.
  • Assigns each worker or apprentice under their charge to available work which they can do their best.
  • Coaches any worker whose skills for doing an assigned task are deficient or rusty.
  • Makes an attempt to place each worker on a task which will constantly challenge him/her to improve his/her skills.
  • Ensures the employees under your supervision are complying with all RDC policies, including policies and procedures related to safety, attendance, conduct, performance, etc.
  • Knows and strictly enforces all job and company safety rules; sets a good example of safe practices; promptly corrects any potential hazard that can be corrected by your crew; reports other hazards immediately to those responsible; and warns everyone on the crew of possible causes of accidents.
  • Lays out jobs for employees and makes sure each knows his/her tasks and the most efficient methods for completing them.  Coaches employees on ways to enhance performance and develop their career growth.
  • Anticipates material needs in plenty of time to place orders and gets delivery without crisis.
  • Ensures that workers have all the materials and tools they need to work as productively as possible. Anticipates needs well in advance so there is no loss of productive time waiting for tools, materials, or instructions. Insists that employees report losses or shortages of tools or materials promptly so you can take the necessary corrective action can be taken.
  • Makes requests to the Superintendent when it is necessary to remove an employee from the job who fails to perform satisfactorily. 
  • Ensures material and equipment needed for the project are ordered timely and available in plenty of time to get delivery to the jobsite in full compliance with schedule requirements.
  • Ensures there is proper storage available to protect tools from damage and theft and follows-up with all Lead Journeymen to ensure all tools are returned to the places where they are to be stored at the end of each shift.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knows the electrical code in effect on the job and keeps applicable national, state, and municipal code books on the job.
  • Able to do material takeoffs.
  • Must be familiar with the NEC.
  • Must be able to read and understand blue prints and electrical one line diagrams.
  • Able to be highly confidential.
  • Proficient with computers to include the utilization of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have current Journeyman License in the State.
  • 10 years of experience in the electrical construction trade as a Foreman and/or Journeyman.
  • Data Center Experience required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to hear and speak to communicate with others and to use a telephone and 2-way radio.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required to operate hand tools, computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Must be physically able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on raised platforms.

 

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Typical construction site conditions from underground installations all the way to finished clean Data Floor and Office.
  • Varying temperatures and loud noises.
  • Must work on-site; no telecommuting permitted.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be comfortable working in a highly critical, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Responsible to wear a cell phone and be available for problem escalation protocol for 24 X 7 support as may be needed.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 35% of the time.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE in performing tasks.
  • Requires current valid driver's license.
