Job Summary

The Project Archivist is responsible for processing a collection of papers on Cinefantastique magazine for the Special Collections Department of the Margaret Herrick Library.  In addition, the Project Archivist will interact with a library team responsible for providing digital access to selected files that document films made under the Motion Picture Production Code. This is a part-time (21 hours per week) NHPRC grant-funded position. The position reports to the Manager of Special Collections and the work will be performed at the Academy’s Pickford Center in Hollywood, beginning on or after August 17, 2015. The appointment is for up to one year.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Arrange, describe, and catalog manuscript material in the Cinefantastique magazine records collection covering the years from 1970 to 2006. Cinefantastique was an American film periodical covering the genres of horror, fantasy, and science fiction.
  • Physically prepare selected files from the Motion Picture Production Code for in-house digitization and create the item-level metadata necessary to provide online access to these records.
  • Track and report regularly on project progress. Identify issues as they arise and troubleshoot to meet deadlines.
 
Position Requirements
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library and Information Science is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in film studies, history, art history or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in an archive or library is preferred.
  • Understanding of the principles of arrangement and description of archival collections and knowledge of archival best practices and current developments.
  • Knowledge of current metadata and descriptive standards, including DACS and EAD.
  • Familiarity with databases and digital asset management systems. Familiarity with Inmagic and TEAMs/OpenText Media Management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of American film history, with broad awareness of the Motion Picture Production Code as well as special effects films.
  • Ability to communicate both simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to people with varying degrees of knowledge of archival theory and practice.
  • Set priorities, meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Good penmanship and organizational skills.
  • Fluent English-language communication skills.
  • Ability to lift a 40-pound box to and from high and low shelving; will need to climb stairs
