Job Title:  Media Designer

Employment Status: Full-Time

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary Year in 2015-2016, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the only museum of its kind among the 21,000 cultural institutions in the United States. The AANM documents, preserves and presents the history, culture and contributions of Arab Americans.  At the same time, the Museum promotes respect for Arab Americans and all Americans – regardless of ethnic heritage – by shedding light on the shared experiences of immigrants and the value of a diverse society. In its brief life, the AANM has earned Accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. It has distinguished itself as a highly successful institution, as evidenced by funder and audience support; national awards for its leaders and programs, and ability to produce original exhibitions and tour them nationally. AANM holds the single-largest collection of research materials about Arab Americans, and in addition to its permanent exhibits produces a robust schedule of temporary exhibitions of art and culture; public programs including concerts, films and panel discussions; and educational offerings including guided group tours, culinary walking tours, music and language lessons, and cultural competency training for businesses, governments and other entities. In short, AANM prides itself on building and serving the community through the arts.

Job Summary: Under general supervision, uses advanced skills gained through training and experience to plan, develop, design, establish and maintain visual communications for AANM using a variety of graphics software applications, techniques and tools to achieve marketing and/or information goals of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, create, and manage visual direction for comprehensive media campaigns and Museum exhibition media (banners, postcards, drop flyers).
  • Manage and maintain several AANM websites including arabamericanmuseum.org and concertofcolors.com, including monitoring errors and troubleshooting.
  • Design and build websites for specific conferences and programs.
  • Graphic design for individual event mailers, event and program flyers, brochures, large format signage, billboards and electronic media.
  • Manage and compile constituted (electronic campaign) lists, and design, send and run analysis on e-blasts and other electronic campaigns.
  • Execute proper alpha and beta testing for all new individual program sites.
  • Update website content on a regular basis.
  • Manage back end files and clean up code issues as needed.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot individual program websites and micro sites.
  • Stay up-to-date in web design strategies and techniques.
  • Operate standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:                                               

Knowledge of:

  • HTML and CSS

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Basic use of web programming languages including Javascript and PHP.
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients, webhost c-Panels, and DNS preferred.

Ability to:

  • Maintain AANM brand integrity throughout all work performed.
  • Partner with other functional areas as well as external business partners to accomplish objectives.
  • Gather information, identify linkages and trends and apply findings to assignments.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization and with external business partners.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Web Design or a related field

  • At least 1 year web design related experience or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Working Conditions:

Hours:   Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel required: local travel may be required.

Working Environment:      Climate controlled office environment.
