Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Nursing Peri-Operative Services practices relationship centered care in concert with the University General Hospital core values of compassion, integrity and innovation and demonstrates excellent customer service standards.

PATIENT AGE GROUP SERVED

Must be able to provide care to patients of all ages according to the patient population served.  Pediatric (13 months – 12 years), Adolescent (12-18), young adult (19-40), middle adult (40-65), and mature adult (65 years and older).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensures that nursing standards and practice are developed and met.
    1. Communicates and clarifies patient care standards and expectations to staff regularly
    2. Monitors and evaluates staff performance to ensure standards are consistently met and takes the necessary steps to ensure above.
    3. Establishes and implements unit goals and objectives.
  2. Monitors all high risk and complicated cases and institutes appropriate actions.
    1. Identifies such cases and implements action plan to ensure staff preparedness in delivering quality nursing care.
    2. Makes recommendations for policy revisions as needed.
    3. Provides staff support to ensure high risk cases are well managed.
  3. Assist in the facilitation of the case management process and cost containment for patients.
    1. Regularly communicates with unit case managers to review and resolve complex patient situations.
    2. Ensures staff education development and participation in case mansgement.
    3. Ensures containment of hospital cost bystaff through accurate charging of supplies and appropriate use of supplies.
  4. Cooperates with all departments to achieve hospital objectives through effective communication and team approach in resolution of issues.
    1. Maintains harmonious relationships with all departments, providing support and assistance to ensure quality customer service.
    2. Demonstrates attitude of cooperation and professionalism.
    3. Seeks and accepts input from Directors/managers regarding interpersonal relationships that affect the hospital’s harmony and serviceability.
  5. Demonstrates accountability for achieving desired patient care outcomes and operational objectives for the department.
    1. Shows flexibility and resourcefulness in identifying optimum solutions to achieve objectives.
    2. Manages time effectively to meet required deadlines.
    3. Works flexible hours in order to ensure resolution of issues that impact department objectives.
    4. Plans staffing in a pro-active manner to minimize problems.
  6. Responsible for staff development
    1. Identifies staff development needs and develops a plan of action to achieve outcomes that meet institutional goals and customer expectations.
    2. Ensures that necessary support is in place to properly orient staff to job duties.
    3. Identify recruitment and retention issues and collaborates with human Resources to address such.
  7. Demonstrates professional practice and conduct at all times.
    1. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in the field of expertise.
    2. Takes responsibility to regularly update self on knowledge of hospital communication and changes.
    3. Demonstrates leadership as Director and facilitates unit development and problem solving.
    4. Communicates effectively with members of the health care team.
    5. Demonstrates behaviors that promote teamwork within department and interdepartmentally, in order to best serve the patient.
  8. Takes lead for Performance Improvement for department.
    1. Articulates department and hospital wide PI program.
    2. Facilitates PI activities within department.
    3. Participates in organization wide PI.
  9. Maintains established department policies and procedures, objectives, Performance Improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
    1. Ensure knowledge of and adherence to policies and procedures.
    2. Addresses safety, environmental and infection control issues through education and policy revision as needed.
    3. Monitors compliance with policies and standards of practice.
    4. Protects patient confidentiality by promoting professional staff communications to be in compliance with policy.
  10. Performs administrative functions related to patient care.
    1. Ensures scheduling/staffing for department to meet customer needs.
    2. Acts as liaison between nursing administration and medical staff.
    3. Takes appropriate corrective action to ensure accountability and quality of service.
    4. Conduct performance appraisals in a timely manner.
    5. Maintains department reports and records/statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes.
    6. Addresses employee issues promptly and effectively.
  11. Assist in developing department budgets
    1. Ensures cost targets are achieved by managing use of resource closely.
    2. Analyzes and communicates factors that impact budget particularly during planning phase and as needed.
    3. Identifies alternatives/opportunities to cost containment in order to meet targets.
  12. Demonstrates the components of the hospital’s core values of compassion, integrity and innovation.
  13. Demonstrates customer service standards by smiling, making eye contact, greeting each patient and visitor, seeing out patient and visitor contact, displaying appropriate body language at all times, taking time to go above and beyond for one patient/visitor each day, honoring diversity, and thanking each customer.
  14. Follows all safety rules while on the job.  Reports all accidents and corrects minor safety hazards.  Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • RN Licensure in the State of Texas
  • Professional certification in clinical area of management.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) years of Management experience in an acute care setting at the Director level.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • A current license to practice as an RN in the State of Texas
  • Current BCLS
  • Current ACLS preferred.
