CLASS SUMMARY:                                                                                                                

The Program Aide is responsible for providing direct care to Community Services Board clients and/or their children in community-based settings and at center-based service site(s).

DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS OF THE CLASS:

I. IMPACT:  This class has the responsibility for the immediate physical and/or mental health of clients and/or their infants.  Activities of incumbent include assist in promoting successful community living for client and/or healthy child development. The incumbent may provide specialized child minding, transportation, and medication administration services to families.

II. LATITUDE:   Routine work is generally performed independently in substance abuse treatment centers and in community based settings.  Supervisory staff is available to assist with assignments and problems.  Work is well guided by program policies, guidelines, and instruction.

III. RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS:  None.

IV. INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:  The work of this class requires continuous contact with program staff, clients, and family members.  In some instances interaction with professionals from other agencies or service providers may be necessary.

V. DIFFICULTY:  Appropriate relationships with a variety of client personality types and disabilities requiring use of judgment and discretion.  Incumbent will be interacting -with clients who have medical, mental and/or substance-related disorders and may be pregnant, any of which may result in occasional abusive outbursts or emergency situations.

VI. COMMUNICATIONS:  Work involves regular oral communication with program staff, clients, and families.  Written documentation such as charting assignments, progress notes, and incident reports are required for this program.

VII. EQUIPMENT/FACILITIES RESPONSIBILITY:   Incumbent will be responsible for facility maintenance and equipment necessary for client care.

VIII. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work may be performed in substance abuse treatment center settings and/or in the community.  Outside activities expose incumbent to elements of nature. Incumbent may be subject to verbal or physical aggression by clients.

IX. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

Good knowledge of the common disabilities, and of the principles and practices relating to the care of people with varying disabilities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, family members, and staff.

Good verbal and written communications skills.

Knowledge of fire and safety practices.

Knowledge of infant care.

Good knowledge of the laws, guidelines and legal procedures relating to mental health care or substance abuse treatment to include HIPPA and 42 CFR Part 2.

X. LICENSURE:  Certification in First Aid and CPR and a valid Virginia Driver’s license.

XI. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLASS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

Provide transportation to appointments.

Insure client's personal hygiene.

Insure meal preparation and/or feeding of client as directed by supervisor or family.

Insure administration of medication as directed by physician and program policy and procedures.

Provide assistance in independent living and/or social skills.

Provide recreational experiences based on individual client needs.

Interact appropriately with clients, their children, families, and occasionally other professions.

Report any difficulties/problems to the supervisor and/or coordinator of the program.

Complete incident reports as necessary.

Build a positive and realistic image of the program within the community.

Safeguard the health, safety, and civil and personal rights of all clients/families.

Performs emergency first aid procedures when necessary.

Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervise visitation of family and friends with the consumer.

Transports clients as necessary.
