Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Every day hundreds of children stay before and after school in our fun and engaging programs. Be part of an amazing team of staff who provide enrichment & recreation activities, each teamwork and social skills, and support children as they grow and learn. You will help provide a safe place before and after school, that is exciting and filled with fun activities that all children to reach their fullest potential.
This role supports the Director of Child Care in the development, organization and delivery of high quality licensed after school childcare, program curriculum, and the Y programs and services. Provides leadership and direction for part time staff and children, ensures positive communication with parents, children, schools and other staff; practice risk management; and develops positive community relations.

This position is up to 40 hours in the summer and averages 36-38 hours a week during the school year.The licensed school age child care program is operated within the Cascade School District facilites.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Work directly with the Director of Child Care to provide on site direction to assigned staff in performance of their duties for a majority of hours that care is provided.Supervises staff and provides feedback to the Director of Child Care on performance. Implements strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Trains, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers as needed.
  2. Assists with development of childcare programs to fulfill the Y's objectives. Implements curriculum within established guidelines. Provides direction for the children within the programs.
  3. Nurtures children though purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging and relationships among youth and within families.
  4. Supervises the children, activities, and facilities within State Child Care regulations and the Y standards and guidelines.Makes ongoing systematic observations and evaluations of each child within programs.
  5. Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents and guardians.Engages parents and guardians as volunteers and connects them to the Y.
  6. Plans participant snacks and ensures that all food service functions are within Health Department and YMCA of the USA Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Guidelines.
  7. Inspects facilities and program areas evaluating safety and compliance with standards and procedures. Reports areas of risk and makes suggestions to reduce risk.
  8. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  9. Models relationship-building skills and encourages leadership by example in all interactions utilizing the Y's core character values.
  10. Ensures all member and community inquiries and complaints are addressed appropriately in a timely manner.
  11. Maintains required program records including registration and payment records as assigned.

OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists with coordinated efforts of the staff team to ensure the security of the offsite program location in order to protect the safety of the members, participants, staff and the public.
  2. Maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  3. Assists with ordering and maintains all site supplies.
  4. Reviews, practices and makes recommendations to improve safety procedures and practices.
  5. Maintains clean, attractive, safe and functional facilities that meet or exceed Health Codes and Y standards.
  6. Attends and participate staff meetings, training, and special activities.
  7. Participates in STARS continuing education and complete required ongoing trainings as required by the Y including but not limited to Child Abuse Prevention training.
  8. Responds to emergency situations.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Applicants must be 18 years of age and have completed High School education or equivalent.

  2. Two years or full time equivalent in management experience and 18 or more college quarter credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, and Elementary Education, and the ability to obtain a total of 30 college quarter credits in these subjects within 3 years. Or possess equivalent educational background in courses relating to child care, human development, or behavioral health.

  3. Have knowledge of school-aged child development and have previous experience working with children in a childcare setting.

  4. Have completed basic STARS training or possess an exemption and complete ongoing training hours as required by law. (i.e. ongoing 10 hours, 20/30 hours basic)

  5. Have or commit to obtaining current CPR, First Aid certifications and Food Handlers.

  6. Have TB test as required under Washington Law.

  7. Proof of MMR vaccine within 30 days of hire.

  8. Complete and maintain annual blood borne pathogen training.

  9. Ability to plan, organize and implement age appropriate/ developmentally appropriate activities.

  10. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

  11. Criminal background clearance that meet the State Licensing standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work with and supervise children in a highly active environment and must be able to quickly move and respond to developing issues during a majority of each work day.The employee will regularly use a computer for a portion of the day and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • A large portion of the responsibilities of this program are performed at the child care site during school age children’s time out of school including before and after regular school hours and during school vacations/breaks and summer.

  • Respond to emergency situations throughout a multi-story building, remote locations, and varying terrain.
