Teaching basic water safety and swimming skills builds confidence in all and creates a safer community. POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Swim Instructors are responsible for the delivery of quality Aquatics programs, including appropriate swimming instruction for individuals and groups, to YMCA members and community members at the Wenatchee Valley YMCA in accordance with established YMCA policies and procedures. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The Swim Instructor performs their work in and around natatoriums at the Wenatchee Valley YMCA.The Swim Instructor must be able to remain alert under conditions of high heat and humidity. The Swim Instructor must be able to physically perform program activities and respond to emergency situations. Frequently standing, squatting, or treading water in the water. Frequently supporting swimmers floatation and or direction within the water and occasionally catching swimmers as they jump in from the side. Paid on the job training and Y-USA Swim Instructor Certification is provided.   Position Requirements ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   Provide skill-based swim and water safety instruction within established standards to people of all ages and abilities. Promotes and supports the potential of all students in the program. Demonstrate proper stroke techniques and skills. Recognize improper technique and work to positively and constructively instruct participant to improve their skills. Communicate in a positive and specific nature with members, participants and other staff. Enforce pool safety standards and facility operational rules while maintaining a positive learning environment. Record class attendance and complete documentation of participant progress. Knows, reviews, practices, follows, and makes recommendations to improve safety procedures and practices at Wenatchee Valley YMCA and enhance the learning experience of participants. Remains alert and responds to emergency situations. Deliver superior customer service to diverse groups of people of all ages from all social and economic segments of the community. OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS: Participates in required YMCA training, meetings and events. Maintain open communication with the Aquatic Team, other YMCA personnel and EYAC patrons. Assist in maintaining first aid and emergency equipment within established standards. Assist in providing clean and safe environment. Document all accidents/ incidents per established YMCA policies and procedures and as required by law. Performs other duties as may be assigned QUALIFICATIONS: Have a current or obtain a CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire date. Completion of in house YMCA of the USA Swim Lessons training. Must be able to think in the abstract, solve problems, make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
