The Academy Oral History Projects Department (http://www.oscars.org/oral-history/about) invites moving image archive studies or library & information science graduate students to apply for a summer internship working with content produced by the Academy’s Visual History Program (http://www.oscars.org/oral-history), a born-digital recording initiative of long-form video interviews with influential filmmakers. This collection is currently made up of more than 100 interviews, and over 400 content hours. We are seeking an organized, enthusiastic intern comfortable with a fast-paced production environment to assist Oral History Projects’ staff in ongoing, post-production, archival and research activities supporting the Visual History Program. Supervised by the Manager of Oral History Projects and working in collaboration with the OHP Archivist/Coordinator, the focus of this internship will be on providing content cataloging and curatorial support for the collection, with duties including: preparing interviews for access through QC, indexing and highlight selection, curatorial research and writing (blogs and clip reels), updating production and collection management databases, and assisting with post-production tasks. The intern may also be assigned additional collection management tasks related to film, video, and/or sound recordings in the Academy Oral History Program collection, as well as have the opportunity to provide input into project development and into the creation of a controlled vocabulary specific to film industry-related interviews.
Duties and Responsibilities: • QC and indexing of Visual History Program transcripts
• Drafting interview summaries and biographical information
• Creating media files, DVDs and assist with clip reels
• QC of digital video files and DVDs
• Selecting interview highlights
• Research/writing draft blog posts for Academy Collections blog
• Processing legacy records (paper & electronic)
• File management
• Research into aspects of digital oral history best practices
• Provide translation assistance (Spanish, Japanese, etc.), if applicable About OHP:
The Academy Oral History Projects (OHP) department records, collects and preserves personal spoken accounts that provide insight into the art, science and craft of motion picture creation. The department is actively bringing together dispersed oral history collections about filmmaking craft by providing storage, cataloging, and preservation through the Academy Film Archive. To make these collections more accessible to researchers and the general public, materials are being prepared for inclusion in a Motion Picture Oral History Digital Archive (MPOHDA), where they will be indexed and accessed through a web-based portal. This internship is based at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study in Hollywood, so the intern will need access to transportation to Hollywood. The intern will be expected to commit 28 hrs. per week from approximately June 12 - August 18, 2017. |
