The United Church of Christ is a 1.1-million-member denomination of 5,300 churches headquartered nationally in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.  Founded in 1957 as the historic union of diverse predecessor churches, the UCC is a multiracial, multicultural church widely known for its commitment to social justice and being open and affirming, and accessible to all.

 

The UCC’s Church Building & Loan Fund (CBLF) offers and promotes financing for the purchase, construction or renovation of church buildings, meeting houses, parsonages/rectories, and other facilities used by churches of the United Church of Christ (or by any Christian church without limitation to sect, denomination or name.)  In doing so it seeks to develop mature and healthy justice-oriented UCC congregations from the young, emerging and/or renewing churches that it uniquely serves.

 

The Church Building & Loan Fund is dedicated to assisting new local churches with the purchase of their first building, along with technical and planning assistance. It also offers loans for site purchases; construction; existing building purchase, maintenance, or renovation; second-unit construction; and capital campaign services.


The ideal candidate will possess skills in finance-related administration, marketing and sales, mortgage lending or real estate; banking and investments; and/or business administration.  The successful candidate will need to be spiritually conversant to the role that CBLF plays in the upbuilding of the church by making building financing possible for young, emerging and renewing congregations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer all aspects of the operation of the Fund, working collaboratively with the other officers and staff of the Fund as appropriate;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate policies and procedures for the prudent operation and management of the Fund and the protection of its assets;
  • Serve as chief loan officer of the Fund and oversee preparation of loan approval requests to the Fund’s board of directors;
  • Oversee the activities of CBLF’s capital fundraising executives and the operation of capital campaign services;
  • Interview, select, and train, employee(s); plan, monitor and appraise employee performance;
  • Serve as a resource to constituents, partners, staff colleagues and others providing special knowledge, understanding and judgment with respect to the program; develop and sustain relationships and linkages with constituency and/or mission partners;
  • Promote the program’s positive public image by responding in writing and orally on a timely basis to inquiries for information including the acceptance of speaking engagements to interpret the mission of the Fund;
  • Attend meetings, contribute to program effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range issues that must be addressed, provide information and commentary pertinent to deliberations, recommend options, policies, and courses of action and implement directives;
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the Fund’s directors, officers and staff by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks;
  • Develop and maintain professional and courteous relationships with staff, directors, partners and other constituents; serve as a positive role model by exemplifying values which are consistent with the United Church of Christ;
  • Work with other financial ministries and racial ethnic communities to develop multiracial, multicultural understanding and resources for church financial development and stewardship;
  • Initiate and strengthen relationships, in concert with others, with potential congregations that may desire affiliation with the United Church of Christ and benefit from the Fund’s mission.
  • Serve as a member of the UCC’s Local Church Ministries Leadership Team.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
  • A college degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience in finance.
  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns and ability to articulate and witness to one’s faith perspective;
  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ (and our full-communion partner church, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), as applicable);
  • Understanding of and commitment to stewardship from a biblical/theological perspective;
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently;
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print resources; public speaking skills and knowledge of a second language when applicable;
  • Competency in leadership planning, development and training;
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets, reading and analyzing financial statements;
  • Experience in office and loan portfolio administration;
  • Demonstrated human relations and supervisory skills;
  • Computer literacy or willingness to learn;
  • Expertise and experience in loan and mortgage management and procedures, underwriting of loan applications;
  • Expertise in the uniqueness of church financial development and non-profit finances;
  • Capacity for contextual analysis of churches and their communities, including group behavior and dynamics;
  • UCC membership preferred.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and globally as necessary.
