JOB SUMMARY:

The Strong Fast Fit Full Time Youth Counselor recruits participants ages 7-17 for the Strong Fast Fit Native and Midtown Community Learning Center Programs. Develops and implements nutrition education, fitness and leadership curriculum. Maintains records and demographics in accordance to program requirements. Plans and implements field trips and family events.

This position implements and delivers Strong Fast Fit Curricula, a culturally specific program that nurtures life-long healthy behaviors to prevent the onset of obesity and risk for type II diabetes, as well help youth prepare for responsible decision making about their sexual health. This position will facilitate age appropriate nutrition education and fitness activities for youth, parents and families individual family check-ins and assessments and encourage youth and families to achieve their fitness goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Develop and Facilitate curricula

  • Facilitate various co-ed or gender specific groups for a school and after school program
  • Conduct and plan educational nutrition and fitness classes for Latino youth ages 7-17.
  • Assess participant’s motor skill level to help determine exercise intensity
  • Incorporate comprehensive sexuality educational curriculum
  • Implement and develop fitness and nutrition curriculum
  • Develop and implement supplemental fitness Curricula that is age appropriate
  • Participate and implement quality program goals according to youth and family needs
  • Recruit for and facilitate alumni group using social action and leadership curriculum

Relationships

  • Serve as liaison between program partners (clinics, community stake holders, schools, youth programs) and the YWCA of Minneapolis.
  • Ensure retention of participants and prevent attrition through high levels of motivation, organization and regulars check-ins with participants and families

Administration

  • Assist the Program Coordinator in providing vision and management of quality programs focusing on youth development and wellness.
  • Recruit and conduct intakes with participants ages 7-17.
  • Record and maintain participant and family information /outcomes monthly and quarterly
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions

Leadership

  • Develop and implement and fitness education curriculum for ages level and physical activity
  • Promote cultural understanding between participants, families, employees and organization mission
  • Serve as a youth counselor substitute and programmatic support for colleagues
  • Support program and department in the implementation of summer programs and special events, i.e. outreach in the community, etc.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Strong Fast Fit Midtown CLC Program Coordinator who reports to the Girls and Youth Program Director. The incumbent will interact with youth, parents/guardians, Minneapolis Public School Representatives and community agencies. Critical relationships will include Coordinators, participants, and parents/guardians.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Community Health Worker Certification (or ability to work towards certification with the support of YWCA)
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university in kinesiology, physical education, youth development; or four years related experience in the field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Strong knowledge of Native Community
  • Ability to manage time between office, program implementation, community events, field trips and family nights
  • Ability to effectively maintain information for recording, purposes and maintain HIPAA act standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to relate with participants and parents/guardians
  • Exceptional conflict management and resolution skills
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrates ability to work with a variety of cultures, perspectives and backgrounds
  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Basic certification or ability to obtain with 30 days of hire

Preferred:

  • One-two years program leadership
  • Experience organizing large-scaled events
  • 2-3 years of experience in successful data-base management, program evaluation and outcome reporting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform and actively participate in 60-minute exercise sessions in various formats including, but not limited to, weight training, running, swimming, cycling, low-impact and high impact aerobics, circuit training, and various team sports.
  • Ability to work outside.
