Position Title:  Family Support Specialist 

Organization: Jewish Family Service of San Diego

Position Type:, Full-Time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt 

Pay Rate:  $21 - $24/hour

Position Overview:

The Family Support Liaison Program aims to support parents and caregivers as they navigate the Child Welfare System (CWS) to reunify with their child/ren, as well as to reduce future CWS involvementThis program focuses on reducing the disproportionality of African American and Black families, including African immigrants and refugees, who are CWS involved.

We are seeking candidates who have experience working with and who can authentically engage in the African American/Black community, which includes African immigrants and refugees in San Diego.

The Family Support Specialist will play a critical role supporting families who are involved in the child welfare system. The Family Support Specialist is responsible for educating families about child welfare laws and policies as well as child safety and well-being; helping families build time management, communication, and financial management skills; and providing referrals to and care coordination with community supports. The Family Support Specialist will work closely with Parent Partners, CWS staff and other community providers. This position will coordinate care for parents and caregivers, assist clients in navigating resource systems, and break down goals into manageable steps. This position may meet with clients in their homes, at a neutral location in the field, or at JFS or CWS offices. The Family Support Specialist will provide care that is client-centered, trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, outcome-oriented, and time specific, with clients completing in 90 days. Face-to-face work with clients may be required. Please note that all reasonable safety precautions will be taken.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promote a family-driven, community-based, culturally and linguistically competent and trauma-informed system of care
  • Conduct comprehensive formal and informal assessments of parents and caregivers, identifying family strengths and areas of need
  • Work with the client to formulate and execute realistic and time-specific goals
  • Participate in Child and Family Team (CFT) meetings
  • Coordinate care with FSLP Parent Partners, CWS staff, and other providers
  • Provide on-going intensive case management to an estimated caseload of 12-15 families
  • Provide appropriate external referrals as needed and with a “warm hand-off”
  • Maintain documentation of client interactions in software system with integrity and in line with the quality standard set by supervisor
 
Position Requirements

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in human services-related field
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with priority population
  • Bilingual/Bicultural preferred (as needed for priority population)
  • Lived experience of child welfare systems and processes preferred
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a case management/resource coordination role

Skills/Knowledge/Personal Qualities Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; must be able to work well with family members, senior managers, and community providers.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings
  • Demonstrate cultural and linguistic competence & sensitivity to population(s) served
  • Comfort working in an environment where multiple languages are spoken
  • Experience setting limits when working with stressed clients, often in some level of urgency
  • Ability to show an unconditional positive regard for clients who turn to JFS for support
  • Previous training in Motivational Interviewing and Financial Literacy preferred
  • Reliable transportation to visit families throughout San Diego County (expense reimbursable)
