Dental Range: $162,094.40 to $182,977.60; plus monthly Dental Director stipend

SUMMARY: The Dental Director (DD) provides dental and administrative direction to the entire dental program of ODCHC. The DD will be responsible for developing effective and consistent protocols, procedures, and policies pertaining to the dental functions of the clinics. In addition, the DD supervises and directs dental staff at all sites and is responsible for maintaining the highest standard of care at all ODCHC clinics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers and supervises the dental functions and staff of all ODCHC clinics.
  • Exercises authority in making employee appointments, dismissals, and any other dental personnel changes under direction of Senior Vice President of Clinical Services and in cooperation with the Vice President of Operations.
  • Chairs Quality Improvement meetings, soliciting recommendations from other staff about necessary and appropriate Quality Improvement activities and in-service training to improve dental services provided by the clinics.
  • Develops, reviews, approves, and implements dental protocols and procedures in consultation with dental staff and operations.
  • Periodically reviews charts of other providers to assess consistency with agency protocols and procedures.
  • Orients and extensively reviews new staff to assure competency. Participates in on-going evaluation and peer reviews.
  • Oversees supervision of the dental supply services at all clinics (review and standardize dental supplies and equipment) and cost containment.
  • Approves dental formulary and makes recommendations for inclusion of new drugs and devices as appropriate.
  • In cooperation with management, reviews resume, participates in interviews, and recommends for hire new dental providers to fill positions approved by Administration.
  • Receives complaints about dental personnel and works to resolve problems in accordance with established clinic policies and procedures.
  • Administrates and manages all dental teaching programs (including NYU AEGD, Dental Externship Programs).
  • Oversees dental lab selection.
  • Actively participates with EMR Committee (i.e., WISDOM and imaging software expert with working knowledge of Smart phrasing and Smart list programing).
  • Adheres to CODA and State of California dental licensing laws and regulations and business codes.
  • Adheres to established clinical protocols, procedures, and attendance policy.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as designated by supervisor.
 

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  • Knowledge of health care delivery and administration, as well as legal and ethical issues related to health and dental care.
  • Ability to work with a team approach to management. Ability to work as a member of a team to solicit input from other affected departments or individuals, communicate pertinent information to other team members, and support team decisions.
  • Ability to be persuasive and diplomatic in encouraging teamwork and cooperation in the pursuit of excellence in service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound and responsible judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal. Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and employees in a staff of varied and diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to supervise others and delegate effectively.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively represent ODCHC's interests in the community.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships among public, private, and professional groups.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of five years of experience supervising dentists and dental personnel.
  • A minimum of three years in a management role.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current California dental license.
  • Preference for having completed a dental residency program.
  • Current DEA license.
  • Current CPR.
  • Faculty appointments in good standing with NYU, UCSF, and any other teaching programs to which ODCHC dental clinics are associated and contracted.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dentists
  • Hygienists
  • Registered Dental Assistants (RDA) and Dental Assistants (DA)
  • Externs and Dental Residents
  • Student RDAs and DAs
  • Responsible for training, evaluating, and initiating disciplinary action for all employees supervised.

SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT: The Dental Director reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Clinical Services and is an integral member of the Dental team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Speaking and hearing are sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person, at normal volumes.
  • Vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation.
