POSITION SUMMARY:  The Staff Accountant is responsible for preparing and verifying accounting information related to fixed assets, balance sheet, account reconciliation, posting revenue, and various other month end balancing and special projects, including providing analytical review of the MWEC monthly financial statements. The position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities and will need to be proactive and adaptable, with the ability to work under pressure to accomplish projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  There will be direct contact with Executives which requires strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.

Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES: 

  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure of MWEC.
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives (where applicable), and current accounting standards.
  • Active participant in the maintenance of the general ledger including journal entries.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation and reporting for annual audit.
  • Assist in preparing spreadsheet analysis and graphs as needed for yearly business review.
  • Assist with ensuring an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end close.
  • Reviews, and solves discrepancies in general ledger accounts.
  • Ensures the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
  • Assist with preparing real and personal property taxes annually.
  • Assist with inquiries from various departments regarding financial results, special reporting requests, etc.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and testing of new accounting systems, methods, procedures and controls to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and account reconciliations.
  • Assist with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Other projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting.
  • Financial reporting/general ledger experience preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in accounting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT (per ADA guidelines):

  • Physical Activity:  Fingering, Talking, Repetitive motion
  • Physical Requirements: Sedentary work.  Involves sitting most of the time.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

The Assistant Controller is required to maintain an understanding of the following areas:

  • Accounting principles
  • Expert spreadsheet knowledge, such as EXCEL.
  • May be required to attend educational seminars related to accounting, spreadsheets, etc. as needed.
