Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. POSITION TITLE: Director of Choral Music & Choral Music Instructor
SUPERVISED BY: Assistant Principal for Student Life
FLSA STATUS: Exempt, Full-time
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 2025
COMPENSATION: $70,000 - $110,000

Position Summary

The Director of Choral Music has the primary responsibility for the development, coordination and supervision of the entire choral music program within the curricular and cocurricular life of the school. This person is responsible for teaching classes and producing at least one concert per semester for the school community. This is a full-time, ten-month position.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model for students and the entire school community the characteristics of a Lasallian Vincentian educator;

  • Support and advance SHC’s mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes;

  • Facilitate, oversee, and be responsible for all aspects of choral productions (Fall concert, Lessons and Carols, and Spring concert) in collaboration with Theater Technical Director and others;

  • Provides academic and artistic leadership for all choral classes, activities and groups;

  • Sustains and grows enrollment and participation in choral classes and productions.

  • Plan what students will learn, how they will learn, and how they will be assessed from an inquiry- and standards-based perspective;

  • Provide effective unit / lesson plans and classes within a block schedule;

  • Support an active, engaging academic learning experience for all students;

  • Provide regular and varied assessments of student learning to compile appropriate grades and properly determine what and how all students are learning;

  • Keep current and complete electronic grading and attendance records;

  • Work with the Academic Resource Specialist and/or counselors to accommodate students who have learning differences or who fall behind in work;

  • Maintain an interactive and timely learning environment, in both physical and virtual learning spaces (e.g., Schoology);

  • Oversee all administrative functions of choral program

    • Select music for classes, concerts, and events

    • Cooperatively collaborate on calendar of events

    • Collaborate on musical theater production

    • Oversee choral music personnel

    • Maintain choral music library

    • Plan and execute choral field trips and tours

    • Oversee choral articulation with elementary schools

    • Coordinate concerts, rehearsals, stage set-up, PR, and programs

    • Prepare and maintain budgets for supplies, professional/technical services, and capital equipment

    • Provide student performances for various school and community events

    • Assist with leading the Br. Arnold Initiative in helping train all students to sing for liturgical and other school wide events.

    • Responsible for preparing choral students (Jubilee Choir) to sing at all scheduled masses and/or working with campus ministry team.

  • In collaboration with other members of the Visual & Performing Arts Department, work toward the department goals:

  • Create in a variety of mediums.

  • Cultivate an appreciation of fine arts.

  • Develop techniques with which they can effectively express themselves in a physical and spiritual manner.

  • Explore questions of beauty and communication in human experience.

  • Practice time management, problem solving, perseverance, and design thinking both individually and collaboratively.

  • Plan and implement projects that bring joy to others and promote an understanding of the diversity of our human family.

  • Reflect on their own creative development as well as on that of other individuals and cultures.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel;

  • Collaborate in the school’s cocurricular activities, service learning, and retreat programs;

  • Engage in professional development, especially our four-year New Faculty Professional Development and Support Program, becoming a reflective and growth-minded practitioner who integrates best and next teaching practices rooted in the SHC mission;

  • Actively participate in SHC’s strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices, especially strategies to support equitable learning, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning;

  • Design and / or implement courses and units that effectively promote the VPA department outcomes and course standards;

  • Actively participate in SHC’s strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful belonging practices, especially strategies to support equitable learning, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning;

  • Provide exemplary personal and professional presence throughout the San Francisco and greater Bay Area community and actively promote SHC’s mission, philosophy, and brand among all current and future stakeholders.

  • Model integrity, ethical behavior, fiscal responsibility and managerial excellence in support of the mission of SHC.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in Vocal/Choral Music or its equivalent;

  • Teaching credential or work toward it;

  • Strong listening skills and musical knowledge;

  • Experience working with high school students;

  • Demonstrated initiative and follow through with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Vocal/Choral Music;

  • Experience as a Choral Program Director and/or previous experience working in a large high school music program;

  • Experience in a Catholic high school setting;

  • Experience as a classroom teacher.
