Snowboard Instructor - 2017/18

We are hiring full and part-time snowboard instructors and are willing to work with your schedule as long as it fits within our needs. Instructors are energetic, passionate, welcoming and hardworking people who love snowboarding, Jay Peak and showing people a fantastic time on snow. We are hiring for all levels of experience from many seasons to first timers. You’ll need your own snowboard equipment including a helmet (which we can help with), a minimum of 24 days commitment, completion of training and a passion for introducing others to snowboarding. Being a part of the Ski & Ride School team is the greatest way to build an intimate relationship with the mountain and its culture. Yes you can teach snowboarding at Jay Peak. And yes, you know you want to.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Our training will teach you everything you need to know about snowboarding and teaching it. You will only be teaching lessons at a level you are comfortable with. Instructors are expected to:

  • Offer high quality, professional instruction and experiences to Jay Peak’s guests
  • Attend both in-house and PSIA training to continually improve upon and fine tune these experiences.
  • Be a supportive and positive member of the entire Ski & Ride School team and resort staff.
  • Demonstrate that they are a part of the team by working outside of teaching and/or Ski & Ride School specific tasks wherever help is needed.
    • Specifically, instructors are expected to help Ski Patrol with Sweeping the mountain at the end of the day.
  • Show an understanding of the director’s three guidelines for customer service: Know where they’re coming from, make a plan for their success, and love them.

Starting pay for the 2017/18 season ranges between $11.00 and $18.75 an hour based on experience and certification level.

Position Requirements

The most important part of being an instructor is your passion and work ethic – but, your snowboarding and teaching ability and education skills are important too.

Instructors need to be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • In good physical condition
  • Passionate with a positive attitude
  • Fun, caring and humble
  • Prepared with modern equipment of good, safe working condition
  • Supportive of Jay Peak's mission, policies and procedures

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Resort Conditions This is a Winter Resort Area. It requires that work venues are varied, and in many cases include steep stairways, multi-level buildings and outdoor work areas, subject to very cold, sometimes wet or very sunny work sites. Some facilities are located at the base or bottom area and some are semi-remote and can only be reached by traveling via chair lift(s), skis or snowboards. Walking surfaces are frequently frozen, sloped and slippery. Proper footwear is a must, indoors and out. Work days and hours, as well as the number of hours required will vary, with an emphasis on weekends and holidays.
