Description

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Contact Plus Coordinator, this full-time Lead Youth Counselor position involves direct service with participants in the Contact Plus Program with Girls Incorporated® at the YWCA of Minneapolis that inspire youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their future. This position provides group, individual, and educational support to low income urban youth ages 10-18 years old. The Lead Youth Counselor will recruit program participants, develop and modify program curriculum, and complete monthly reports. The Lead Contact Plus Youth Counselor will collaborate with the Minneapolis Public Schools and other youth serving agencies utilizing the Girls Incorporated® program curriculum and Contact Plus curriculum/resources to meet program goals and outcomes. Leadership responsibilities include training and supporting Contact Plus team members, as well as team members across the Girls and Youth Department. This position actively participates on external committees related to program goals; ensuring that Girls Incorporated® concepts, philosophies and curriculum are implemented.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Implement comprehensive sexual health programming:

  • Recruit program participants by providing program presentations to schools and youth serving agencies.
  • Maintain program participants.
  • Conduct intakes with participants and provide individual support and follow up to youth participants.
  • Plan, prepare and facilitate/co-facilitate educational activities related to Contact Plus curriculum.
  • Develop age appropriate and culturally sensitive curriculum.
  • Refer youth to other appropriate community resources as needed and as necessary.
  • Document, develop and modify curriculum activities

Collaborate with Minneapolis Public Schools, youth serving organizations and families:

  • Participate on external committees to plan and/or implement appropriate community meetings or events and agency task forces.
  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with school personnel, families, and other organizations youth serving agencies.

Administration:

  • Provide written summary of the impact of direct service to programs.
  • Prepare and submit monthly report, evaluations, and program documentation by deadline.
  • Share expertise and collaborate with YWCA colleagues.
  • Train and coach Girls and Youth staff in program curricula and administrative work (i.e., monthly reports, spreadsheets, etc).

Seek continuous professional development:

  • Attend workshops, seminars and conferences that will enhance personal and professional development.
  • Participate in educational activities to improve achievement of program goals.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings.
  • Keep up-to-date on current youth and program-related trends.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Contact Plus Program Coordinator who reports to the Girls and Youth Vice President. The incumbent will interact with Contact Plus and Girls Inc ® Youth Counselors, School Administration, youth participants, parents and funders. Critical relationships will include School Administrators.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Knowledge of sexual health issues and adolescent development.
  • Minimum of four years experience and demonstrated customer service working with youth from low-income and inner city families.
  • Minimum of two years college or continuing education in youth development.
  • One-year minimum experience with lesson planning and facilitating structured groups.
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills to articulate program objectives and goals.
  • Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive sexual health topics.
  • Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to carry out duties independently as well as in a team setting.
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to make quick decisions while using good judgment.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to various program sites and meetings.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a minimum four years clean driving experience.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Excel, Word, and Publisher.

Preferred:

  • BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field.
  • Two years experience creating age appropriate activities and curriculum.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis sites.
